About the Author
Award-winning journalist and former deputy editor of LA Weekly. Joe Donnelly is an award-winning journalist who has worked for the New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and numerous other national and international publications. His work has appeared in several anthologies and literary publications. Donnelly was the deputy editor of the LA Weekly from 2002- 2008. Before that, Donnelly was the arts editor of New Times Los Angeles and the editor in chief of the seminal Los Angeles pop-culture magazine, Bikini. He eared his masters in journalism from UC Berkeley.
Award-w Laurie Ochoa is a beloved story editor known for her high standards and ability to encourage new and established writers to do their best work. During her eight years as editor in chief of the LA Weekly, she produced a literary city paper with highly regarded investigative, cultural and lifestyle coverage and led the paper to more national journalism awards than any other alternative newspaper in the country, including the Pulitzer Prize in 2007. What a GREAT idea!

Counter-intuitive, biting and very Los Angeles, Slake is the brainchild of the folks who brought us the best version of L.A. Weekly in California history. It's a quality magazine, more like a fine collection from a beloved author, friendly and intended to be kept with your favorite books. I love my Kindle, and hope they go ebook too, but for me Slake is something you want to feel in your hands, sniff coming out of the envelope and pass along to your kids. Well done, folks. Looking forward to the next issue.

Enjoying the Ride!

I am enjoying the ride that is my summer reading of SLAKE. I am a voyeur at heart and I feel like I am peeking in the window of people's souls through their memoirs in the journal. I am amazed by the real-life dramas that read like movie scripts--really good movies, that is. The variety of stories and imagery keep me engaged. I am actually tired of the fast-paced magazine flipping I usually do on the plane; and tired of the "quick read" of some of my usual blog sites and news sources. I find SLAKE to be refreshing and rejuvinating for my mind and soul. I am a proud subscriber!

Slake is the kind of magazine that intends to slow you down and make you think and keep you on your toes. Poetry, prose, articles, editorials. Absolutely daring to bring it out at this point in time, and manna from heaven for those of us who love to read. Subscribe.
