Nice book of design ideas

I purchased this book through a book club without being able to look at it first. I may have purchased it anyway, but there are probably some other beading books better suited to my style than this one. The main reason being that artist uses metal chain more than I do in my work. Even so, there are a few design ideas (briole earrings and a chunky charm bracelet) that I may use for inspiration in my own jewelry.

The author provides some background information at the beginning that tells about the different types of beads, charms, etc that can be used in designs. There is also information about clasps, findings, tools, chain and thread that beaders may find useful. I found tidbits of information that were new to me. There are also a few pages on techniques, but the majority of the book focuses on designs and techniques specific to those designs. At the end of the book the author includes resources for supplies in North America, Europe and Asia.

Each design project includes a material list accompanied by a photo of some of the components. There are several pictures of the project at different stages to illustrate the techniques needed as well as a photo of the final project. The text explaining the steps is brief, but tips are included as well as descriptions of possible variations to the design. All photos are full-color. Most of the designs use glass, crystal, gem stone, abalone and pearl beads as well as metal chain and accents. The final products look very professional.

Overall, I give the book good marks because I think it is well done.

Graphology made understandable

I have studied this book for many years. It is fascinating, well researched and laid out. In years in the property rental business my wife and I made sure to get as much handwritten application input as possible. Australian high adventure

Six Australian children are each emotional, in their various ways, to be going on a light aircraft trip to Coonabibba Station , in Western New South Wales. These children are:

Gerald and Carol, firm friends, and members of the 'in' group,
Colin and Mark, a quiet older brother and a rowdy younger brothers, and,
Bruce and Jan, fraternal twins, the brother burley and affable and the sister nervous and intuitive.

Coonabibba is Gerald's family's place and the children are invited there for his birthday party and to stay weekend. But little do the children know that something terrible is about to happen. This disaster will challenge all of them and deeply affect them as they rise to meet the challenge.

While there are numerous books in the 'survival' genre this one shines above the rest due to the author's excellent writing style. Southall manages to instill the text with stress and tension, sustaining it chapter after chapter. He achieves this effect by concentrating on the psychological affects of events on his characters, especially letting us hear their inner monologue as they struggle with their needs, wishes and inadequacies. In this way Southall manages to truly involve and move the reader. The first half of the book is in fact some of the best writing I have read for some time, even outshining many writers for adults. Another point in Southall's favor is that he manages to take his characters somewhere. The six children at the end of the book are very different from those we begin with. The reader comes to empathize with all the individual children as their fortunes rise and fall. won the Australian Children's Book of the Year Award for 1968 and that prize was truly deserved. While the book is now quite old it has not dated in any way as Southall has kept the text quite clean of cultural and historical references.

About the Author

David Boucher is Professorial Fellow in European Studies at Cardiff University. He is Director of the Collingwood and British Idealism Centre at Cardiff. He was formerly a professor of Political Theory and Government at the University of Wales, Swansea.

Past works include 'Political Theories of International Relations' (1998), 'Social Justice: From Hume to Walzer' (edited with Paul Kelly, 1998) and 'The Social Contract From Hobbes to Rawls' (edited with Paul Kelly, 1994). Paul Kelly is a Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at LSE. He has previously taught as a Lecturer in Politics at the University of Wales, Swansea.

Past works include 'Multiculturalism Reconsidered' (October, 2002), 'British Political Science' (edited with Patrick Dunleavy and Michael Moran, 2000) and 'Social Justice: From Hume to Walzer' (edited with David Boucher, 1998).

Better Changes Found

Sher has done a wonderful job of publishing tunes with the correct changes. Original as well as alternate changes are provided in easy to read, full page format. This is a big help for people like myself who have trouble reading small print. The spiral binding of the book allows for easy turning of the pages.

Finally, a legit copy of the jazz musician's BIBLE!

From playing in both my high school's and college's jazz ensembles, it was clear to me that "The Real Book" was the bible of jazz standards. No instructor was without a copy. As a bass player, there have been countless times were I was just tossed a photocopy of a page from the Real Book and the instructions of "Here, do a walk over this chord progression."
A number of things made this book the most demanded of its kind. First of all, it contained hundreds and hundreds of jazz songs in a single volume. Second of all, it mostly followed a one-page-per-song format, showing the most essential parts: the chord and structure changes, the introductions, and the melody. If a song seemed to center around something like a particular repeated bass line, then that line was also shown. And last but certainly not least, the type face and unique "hand written" look made it the by far easiest book to physically read (no eye strain!)
Unfortunately, The Real Book was next to impossible to hunt down. No music stores carried it, or at least admitted to carrying it. It was pretty much an under-the-counter item that you could only get if you knew somebody. I guess these $50 books were always secretly copied and bounded in some local guy's basement, in hopes of skirting all the legal copyright issues.
Finally, Sher Music Co. has taken the original Real Book, got copyright clearance from each and every living composer, and in so doing even got to correct many mistakes based off the the composers' very own lead sheets. They also threw in a number of full-page photographs of jazz greats. The result is the only LEGAL, updated, and widely obtainable version of the original underground book.
One of the reviewers here seemed to make the gross assumption that this is a piano book. It's not. It's a book for everybody in the band. The fact that there are C, Bb and Eb versions of the book should tell you this. I've always been amused by "Piano/Vocal" sheet music books for bands that never even had a piano or keyboard player. For rock bands, they usually attempt a bad transcription of the guitar on the treble clef, and an even worse transcription of the bass on the bass cleff (written an octave down, of course).
Which brings me to the reason why this book was always called "The REAL Book": it's because it didn't take the shortcuts that "Fake Books" take. "Fake Books" are called such because they allow you to "fake" the song, i.e. dumb-down some chord changes, play it in a presumably easier key, and usually even try to adapt the whole song to the single instrument of piano.
It's so great to see a legit copy of this book in print. If you play jazz, this is the one book always worth investing in.
