Excellent, unique presentation of the thought process. If everyone in the organization adopts the visually stimulating idioms suggested for each category of thought presented-- colored thinking hats, the group creative thought process can be managed much better and individuals guided into thought playing roles, without risk to their egos!
This book appears to be unfinished in the sense that the style is one of presenting a series of terse statement paragraphs with a liberal sprinkling of example paragraphs. A smooth transition between paragraphs is often missing--the book almost appears to be an organized presentation of the author's brainstorming sessions!
I personally found the book refreshing, thought provoking and timeless ( in the sense that anyone interested in managing creative thought will always be able to use the techniques presented).

simple, effective, 'short and sweet'

Edward De Bono guides you to a clearer way of thinking thru lateral thinking in his book the Six Thinking Hats. Amazon user jeffr265 could not have stated it better "The six thinking hats method is a simple and easy concept to understand and implement."

De Bono starts off by explaining to the reader why it's a challenge to become a thinker. This book is based on his six different approaches or ways of thinking, (referred to hats in the book) that people should use in order to fully view all issues. He refers the ways as hats so one can "put on" or switch from one approach to another easily. Each hat has a color that would help the reader visualize the approach/function. (ex: black- negative, yellow-positive and so on ) colors include white, red, black, yellow, green, and blue. Having everyone in a group wear the same type of hat helps the issues, meeting, be more non-confrontational, organized, an effective.

Overall the book is very well structured with plenty of examples. This made it very fun, easy to read and comprehend. The book is "short and sweet" it does not drag and cuts right to the point. This book helped me organize my thought and allowed me to view all aspects using the different hats when I'm approached with an issue. I defiantly recommend it for meetings, leaders, teams, management and you!

Color helps many people.

For many people color is a mnemonic device. For the purposes of this book, color is more. It is a signal and an idea. Bringing the concepts of thinking into hats and color for problem solving can help people who like to build cohesion and get along so that objectivity is easier. If nothing else, this book has inspired me to buy more hats. Another book I have about color is quite different about what colors do for us. Then there is the Irlen Institute. What does this do for people who are color blind?

This book is the 2nd in a multi volume set documenting the history of the Royal Air Force (RAF) 2nd Tactical Air Force. The authors did a breath taking job of research and documentation concening the activities of the RAF 2nd TAF during this time period. The photographs included in the book are also excellent. This book will be of interest to avaiation, World War II, and RAF historians. An excellent resource book and one that will stand the test of time.

Superb History for Fans of Royal Air Force or Ground Attack

This is volume 2 in a three volume set on the 2nd Tactical Air Force, which was so important in supporting Allied ground advances following the Normany invasion in ground attack. These are large volumes with a quality binding and excellent artwork, which one comes to expect from Classic Publications. Though the price is hefty, especially for all three volumes, the coverage is excellent, including unusual color profiles, detailed coverage of Tempests, Typhoons, Spitfires, and Mustangs. Sections on "Tank Busters or Morale Busters" and "Who Got Rommel" are particularly interesting. Although there are excellent details on maps and airfields and daily losses, readers of the other two volumes will miss the solid order of battle information present in volumes 1 and 3. Readers of the Osprey aircraft series will find new information here and a wonderful level of detail.

The late Sam Walton was one of the shrewdest and richest merchants in America. Centered on the building of his Wal-Mart empire, his book, like fellow magnate Sandra Kurtzig's CEO: Building a $400 Million Company from Ground Up ( LJ 5/1/91), is light on biography. However, readers will enjoy the folksy narrative of the small-town millionaire who revolutionized retail distribution. Walton also addresses accusations against him, such as running the competition out of town. Coauthor Huey does a fine job of incorporating candid testimonials from family members and associates, who thought Walton's ideas were sometimes silly. Shortly after Walton's death, the book was given an overly sentimental postscript (a minor detraction) and rushed into print. Highly recommended for public and academic business collections.

Very good - especially with Wal Mart now taking heat

First off, this is a very strong story of a man and a business. Walton does a nice job of telling a clear, concise story about how he built the business of Wal Mart. It's very enlightening to hear him admit with pride that he invented very few of the ideas that made the store such a success, instead borrowing the best ideas from every store he visited (and he visited a lot).

Secondly, this book contains a valuable example of how capitalism forces the evolution - for better or worse - of industries. Walton takes the reader from the days of the small-town five and dime all the way through the mega Wal Marts of today. It's a valuable read for anyone interested in business.

Third, reading "Made in America" provides the reader with some important context for considering all of the attacks on Wal Mart in the popular press. You get to see that Wal Mart was built with really good intentions and that even though not everything born of Wal Mart's rise to dominance is an unmitigated good, it has done a lot of positive things for American consumers. That's really valuable because Wal Mart has become a bit of an unequivocal evil in the modern press and that simply isn't an even-handed treatment of the subject.

Highly recommended for those who would like to understand the motivations behind Wal Mart being what it is today and a great business story to boot.

Self-serving autobio of a truly great entrepreneur

Walton's story is certainly worth reading. He built a business - now the biggest in the world - that can only be described as the work of a genius.

The great virtue of this book is the portrait of his mind: he was utterly obsessed with retailing and bent a truly formidable energy to think about it at almost every working hour of the day. It may sound corny, but he reminds me of Miles Davis, who lived, breathed and ate his music. Walton looked at things from every angle, learning as he worked and unafraid to walk into a competitor's office unannounced with a tennis racket to talk. He was a showman and true believer, but also focused maniacally on operations and implementation. (About this, he pontificates about his competitors enjoying the trappings of success to the detriment of their attention to business - surely this is true in some cases, but repeatedly hearing it gets a bit boring.)

The business model he created is simple: always offer the lowest price possible, depending on higher volume to generate higher profit. The second pillar was to relentlessly pursue logistical superiority, in both a distribution system and computer-aided controls, enabling Wal-Mart to continually enhance its efficiency and speed of delivery. As the company grew, it was able to use its power to force suppliers to sell at ever-lower prices. Its stores spread slowly, oozing out like molasses, always supported by the distribution system. The third pillar, which in my opinion is exaggerated to the point of self-delusion, is the "family" aspect of employees (or "associates"), both as members of a store and in relation to customers. Certainly there is something to that, but it is far more limited than he seems to be aware of. Throughout, Walton offers many invaluable recommendations for business men and entrepreneurs. THere is no question he was one of the best.

The great failure of the book is Walton's inability to reflect on the impact of his company. Rather than taking the arguments of critics to heart honestly in the slightest, he dismisses them as people who moved to cities and are merely nostalgic about their childhoods in rural towns that have changed in no way because of his business practices. He also refuses to contemplate the impact of his company's power to act as a monopsony (sole buyer), forcing conditions on suppliers that can ruin them. That is one of the great changes in 20C capitalism: the shift of power of retailers to the detriment of manufacturers and suppliers, which Wal-Mart pioneered. Finally, he views unions exclusively as divisive influences rather than legitimate players and potential allies. In this, he shows little realistic empathy whatsoever regarding employees who don't appreciate their position or treatment in his stores.

Walton appears to believe in his own myth and he presents it well: his tone is down home, expresses a genuine Christian humility, and believes in small-town values. Fair enough, but there are many who see things differently. I suppose that that self-serving tunnel vision and absolute confidence in the system he created is part of his entrepreneurial genius, but it is also a clear statement on its limits.

Recommended. This is on a par with Ray Kroc's autobio and will interest all students of business.

You feel as if Grandpa was talking to you.

Despite my hesitation at picking up an autobiography, I must say Made in America turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise. In it, Sam intersperses story telling with quotes from his colleagues, family and the media. After reading the story, you get a very clear picture of Sam's humble beginnings as a local boy who delivered papers, a boyscout who saved a person's life, a variety store franchise owner who was driven out of town because his lease expired and he didn't know that it was part of the contract he signed. In it you also learn what the Walmart Way was about. It's about hard work, passion for the job and thoughtful spending.
He completed it just before he died of cancer. And a good thing he did because nobody can tell the story better than the person who's lived it.

Tea in China explores the contours of religious and cultural transformation in traditional China from the point of view of an everyday commodity and popular beverage. The shift in drinking habits that occurred in late medieval China cannot be understood without an appreciation of the fact that Buddhist monks were responsible for not only changing people's attitudes toward the intoxicating substance, but also the proliferation of tea drinking. Monks had enjoyed a long association with tea in South China, but it was not until Lu Yu's compilation of the Chajing (The Classic of Tea) and the spread of tea drinking by itinerant Chan monastics that tea culture became popular throughout the empire and beyond.

Tea was important for maintaining long periods of meditation; it also provided inspiration for poets and profoundly affected the ways in which ideas were exchanged. Prior to the eighth century, the aristocratic drinking party had excluded monks from participating in elite culture. Over cups of tea, however, monks and literati could meet on equal footing and share in the same aesthetic values. Monks and scholars thus found common ground in the popular stimulant―one with few side effects that was easily obtainable and provided inspiration and energy for composing poetry and meditating. In addition, rituals associated with tea drinking were developed in Chan monasteries, aiding in the transformation of China's sacred landscape at the popular and elite level. Pilgrimages to monasteries that grew their own tea were essential in the spread of tea culture, and some monasteries owned vast tea plantations. By the end of the ninth century, tea was a vital component in the Chinese economy and in everyday life.

Tea in China transcends the boundaries of religious studies and cultural history as it draws on a broad range of materials―poetry, histories, liturgical texts, monastic regulations―many translated or analyzed for the first time. The book will be of interest to scholars of East Asia and all those concerned with the religious dimensions of commodity culture in the premodern world.

A brillant and refreshingly well researched book

James Benn has written a scholarly masterpiece which has earned a prominent place of honour among my exhaustive collection of tea books. Dispensing with the usual (and quite sad) tendency to repeat the tired myths about tea as if they were absolute truths, he has dug down deep into the sources and refreshingly returned with clarity and eruditness to not only dispel the false, but more so, to paint a new picture of the evolution of tea and tea culture in China. This is a very valuable book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Tea in Old China

I can only agree 100% with Matthew London's review (the only other one so far). This is a major work. It covers tea in China from the beginning through the Ming Dynasty; it is best on Tang and Song. It draws on a vast range of Chinese sources, almost none of them previously mined in any detail by western writers. It does indeed, as London says, avoid the tired myths; it breaks new ground and provides us new translations throughout. Benn shows that tea was closely associated with Buddhism from the beginning through Song. He provides details on differing ways of brewing the stuff over the centuries. He has some fun with the incredible lengths of tea connoisseurship, which resemble wine snobbery today. For anyone interested in tea, or in the history of Chinese consumption, this is an indispensable book.

Die in der Nachfolge der Imperialismustheorie stehende Dependenztheorie erkl�rt die Entwicklung der lateinamerikanischen L�nder als „Entwicklung zur Unterentwicklung“, die durch exogene Faktoren veranla�t wird. In dieser Einleitung mag es gen�gen die Hauptaussage der Dependenztheorie so darzustellen: Die kapitalistischen L�nder des Nordens sichern ihre eigenen Aufstieg und ihre wirtschaftliche Potenz durch die Ausbeutung der L�nder der sogenannten Dritten Welt. Diese L�nder sind assymetrisch in die Weltwirtschaft integriert und haben in dieser Konstellation keine M�glichkeit, sich der Ausbeutung selbst zu entziehen. Die industrialisierten L�nder haben wiederum kein Interesse daran, die Situation zu �ndern, da sie selbst von der Ausbeutung profitieren. L�sungen, die innerhalb der Dependenztheorie angeboten werden, variieren je nach Richtung zwischen der Schaffung eines lateinamerikanischen Wirtschaftsmarktes bis hin zu radikalen Umst�rzung der Welt(wirtschafts)ordnung, um den Kapitalismus zu vernichten. This is true story of how Russian Mafia has invaded America.Russian Mafia must be stopped just like any other ethnic mafia. Russian Mafia is mostly Jewish, but they betray even Israel for money. The Russian Mafia only works for itself, and no country. They have no loyalty to Russia, USA, or Israel, but only for their mafia organization.Russia , USA, and Israel have been victims of their crimes. Now is the time for all three countries to work together to limit the Russian Mafia.

Extremely frustrating!
By taking a rest
The demise, dissolution, breakup, choose your own word, of The Former Soviet Union is about as dramatic a Historical Event as one is likely to witness. It is not a simple topic, what has happened, and what will continue to evolve will fill hundreds of books well into the future. Attempting an overview of what is presented, as the largest illegal transfer of wealth on record cannot be done in 288 pages even if the pages are microfilm! Every time this book began to focus on a specific event, it would jump to the next.
There is more information in this 288-page book than anyone can possibly digest. Trying to keep track of the organizational structure of the "Mafiyas", and their relationships to each other, would take a Cray Supercomputer. The Author also touches on Historical events of huge import, theories on what may result from them, and they too are quickly abandoned, before any real exposition has been offered.
There is a theory that the wealth that has been removed from Russia/The Former Soviet Union could have similar effects politically as The Versailles Treaty of WW I had on Germany. It's an interesting idea, may warrant a book, but not the shallow mention it receives here. There are at least a dozen similar theories that are intriguing in the extreme. These cannot be treated like bulleted points in a memo.
This is a highlight book of illegal activity that spans from Meyer Lansky to the present. One of the problems is names like Genovese, Gambino, and Gotti, are familiar to readers of the genre. This book mentioned hundreds of organizations, and half the Countries on the Planet! You are rushed through diamond mines in Sierra Leone, Switzerland, Germany, Israel, Cuba, Azerbaijan, Turkey Brighton Beach Restaurants, half of South America, virtually all of North America, and nearly every state in the U.S. And there are the 14 time zones of Russia and the Prison System of The Gulags across Siberia.
The Author clearly knows his subject. I would hope he would take the time, slow down, and concentrate on depth rather than breadth.
