About the Author
Mary Knight has lived in many wondrous places -- Traverse City, Michigan, and Whidbey Island, Washington, among them. She and her husband now reside in Lexington, Kentucky, where she enjoys living in the rolling green hills of horse country, exploring the Appalachian Mountains to the east, and watching University of Kentucky basketball. Most of all, she cherishes time with friends and family, who add great wonder to her life. Saving Wonder is her debut novel.

A delightful labyrinth

In her debut novel, Mary Knight proves an ability to see, then curate these observations about the experience of youth, family and community relationships and political issues that, like it or not, affect all of us. She masterfully weaves these observations into a novel that transcends the YA category. Her storytelling voice is convincing and authentic, and she peppers the prose with a unique approach that has been seen nowhere else -- by this reviewer, in any case.

Knight is tuned in to Kentuckians' sense of place and, therefore, sense of self. This includes world-class natural wonders and cultural touchstones such as the Kentucky Derby and University of Kentucky men's basketball. The reader should not mistake Knight's familiarity with the area with regional writing, however. The themes explored in this book -- person against nature, person against self, conflict with oneself -- transcend state and national boundaries.

This novel is a "wonder" that will be "saved" forever on this reviewer's bookshelf and on the bookshelves of others. It makes a fantastic gift.

The first book was just okay, but this one ...

The first book was just okay, but this one lacks coherency and narrative logic. There's also something off about the tone. None of the characters felt genuine. I admit I gave up about halfway through, but I was getting really frustrated by the endless pointless snippy dialogue and frankly, there was nobody likable. Everybody was petty and kind of mean.

Kippy Strikes Again!

Kathleen Hale is so fricking funny my guts still hurt from this book. Kippy is one of my favorite protagonists in years--her brand of crazy is so unique you can't help but get wrapped up in it.

Don't want to spoiler anything, so I'll just say that if, like me, you loved the first book, you'll absolutely want to pick this up.

I've met Laurie Hartman at F.I.C.O.,Flanders International College of Osteopathy,were he tought his techniques.He is so brilliant that he remaines the modest man himself.His manipulations as he does it are so easy and we ,the students , are wresteling with it.I've learned to follow the tissues and not the technique as we learned them. Bad for learning, good for reference. Broad in scope, at the expense of being unnecessarily concise.

I've taught myself many subjects from multiple textbooks so I have a pretty good intuition for what constitutes clear explanations. If you've already taken a Multivariable Calculus class before and are just looking for a good reference book: maybe you can save space on your bookshelf by using this as a comprehensive reference text for all things calculus.

Otherwise, this is a terrible textbook to learn Calculus from. The explanations of concepts are unnecessarily obtuse and formal. This is not a textbook intended to make learning easy or clear. It is a reference text for someone who already understands the subject. Whenever I struggled with a topic from this book, I would have to open my Calculus textbook by Larson & Edwards for better explanations.

If you have a choice: skip this book and buy a used copy of ISBN-13: 978-0547167022 for ~$24.

Not clear all the time

The first problem I noticed with this book was that there were typographical errors. I found two in the first chapter alone, and one of them was a misspelling of "Archaea". In a textbook, there definitely shouldn't be mistakes in the spelling of words related the the subject matter. In addition, I've seen mistakes in the concept problems at the end of some of the chapter.

I found most of the diagrams to be clear, but my professor often supplemented them by bringing in examples from other books that he claimed were better. Sometimes diagrams referenced in the text would be on the following page, so I would be flipping pages back and forth to look at the diagrams and the text.

The biggest upside to this book was the price. I paid just over $50 to buy it new and it came with access to online resources. At the time I am writing this review, the price for a new copy on Amazon is more than $110. I would not recommend buying this if it isn't required for a class. I think there are many other genetics textbooks out there that are better that you could get for a similar price.

It is easy to read and the photos are helpful in explaining the material. Highly recommend this version. My course required a more updated version, but this one suited my needs just fine.
