Book is excellent and hard to get. i was glad to see it on Amazon. My only gripe is the format--i would have preferred a HARDCOPY Edition for my collection. Hardcopy or not , this was a must for me.

An extensive analysis of the Maya pantheon

Worth every cent of its price, this probably is the most comprehensive study of Classic and Post-Classic Maya deities currently available. It covers all gods of the revised Schellhas list with an overview of the important characteristics, symbolism, assorted associations and temporal occurence, and also includes a chapter on deities later imported from Mexico. But be warned: This book assumes quite a bit of prior knowledge, and therefore features passages in all probability undecipherable for the beginner. Books you should at least have read before taking on this volume are "The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya", "Aztec and Maya Myths" (both also by Taube), "An Introduction to the Study of the Maya Hieroglyphs" by S.G. Morley and Dennis Tedlock's "Popol Vuh"- translation, with "The Ancient Maya" (Robert J. Sharer) and "Breaking the Maya Code" (Michael D. Coe) also recommended. Due to this un-populist approach, it's a rather scientific (read: slightly dry) read, but the amount of facts presented here reduces this to a minor quibble. So, if you already know your tzolkin from your haab, and your Cholan from your Yucatec, and now want to expand your knowledge of the Maya pantheon, this is the book to read. Highly recommended.

I am halfway through the book. It is life changing. These precious truths about confessing God's Word are timeless. I grew up in a Word of Faith home and I learned these truths and have even operated in them for most of my life. This book is a great reminder or an introduction that we have what we say according to Mark 11:23. Throughout the Bible, we see this truth time and time again. Proclaiming the Word of God daily can only help the believer. I dare anyone to read this book and apply it immediately. You will see results because God's Word works. If you believe and obey Mark 11:22-25, you will see the power of it in your life. This is serious business. I know many people preach against confession or the Word of Faith camp but God's Word is God's Word and it doesn't matter who doesn't believe it. I learn from many different camps including the Reformed Camp. I understand that not one camp/group has all the light in the Bible. If we would stick to the Bible and pray and trust the leading of the Holy Spirit then we will walk into the light.

Everything in Christianity is depended on faith. We got saved through faith in the finished work of the cross and we go to heaven by that same faith. We pray in faith and we live by faith. There are many dimensions of the Christian faith. Dr. Price describes the faith to get our needs met both physically and financially. Examine the scriptures in this book and apply them and you will see the results. The key is consistency. Obeying the Word of God will only result in the blessings of the Lord.

About the Author
Doug Hills has been drawing ever since high school. Originally influenced by the superhero comics of the early- to mid-1990s, his style has adapted towards his other favorite genre: manga. Learning and studying techniques from both the East and West, he’s constantly striving to create a style that can truly be called his own.
In recent years, he has taken that love and desire for comics onto the Internet with two webcomics: Place Name Here and Chibi Cheerleaders From Outer Space, which he works on with his wife, Stacey. His webcomic work led him to Ten Ton Studios, where he worked on a story for their book, Anthologica, and eventually became a member of the group.

Obsolete for MangaStudio 4

Presumably this text was published before the release of MangaStudio 4. Consequently, there are way too many illustrations of dialog boxes that no longer exist, and way too many step-by-step guides that are no longer valid. Terms and labels in the book don't match the software.

There was no disclaimer in the Amazon.com description that specified this critical shortcoming.

Good book, but pace felt rushed.

Background:

I have just recently acquired Manga Studio Debut, since I'm running Leopard on my Mac, I can't use Manga Studio EX. In attempting to learn the software more quickly, I picked up a copy of Manga Studio for Dummies. I've had really good luck with Dummies books in the past, so this book got my first try.

First Impressions:

My first impression of the book was that it felt rushed. It tries to cover a good number of topics about the software package, but doesn't really go into depth about any particular feature. In several cases, there is one paragraph that goes over several features, without a good demonstration of the features being covered. Given the fact that this book was a dummies book, I had expected a more grounds up approach. I didn't find that. The approach of the book is really more along the lines of: if you've worked with another graphics editing package, like Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. then use what you already know and here are some of the characteristics of this software that differs.

It's not a bad book, it just did not fulfill the task that I had thought it would.

Issues With The Book:

The legends. Or more specifically, the differentiation between EX features and Debut features. The book is in black and white. The legend indicates that EX features are in grey. I went through the book and only with some effort, was I able to see where the feature sets and coverage for one package and another one began and end. For someone using Manga Studio EX, this isn't a problem. For someone who is using Debut... it downright sucks.

Suggestions:

If you are looking for a Manga Studio book for the copy of Manga Studio you just got, this is, at this time, the only English offering out there. If you can read Japanese, you can look for Comic Studio (debut / EX / Pro ) books, which are in Japanese, and of which there are many many such books out there.

If you are the author, I would strongly suggest putting out a second revision with better division and/or visual isolation of what is a Debut feature and what is an EX feature. I would also suggest adding a start-to-finish on using Manga Studio (debut or Ex/pro) to sketch/draw and finish a whole page.

The flow of the book really didn't feel smooth. I felt like I was switching from reading a list of features with quick summaries to a two page write up of how some of those features, but not all, could be used on a sketch... except the sketch was just a bunch of circles and lines. One single picture of circles and lines. This didn't really help with illustrating what a particular feature did and how it would impact the drawing/sketch.

I'm a big fan of supporting authors and good books, but I'm sorry to say, I had to return this book. Instead, I picked up two other books on general manga sketch technique since this book, which I went to the stores to specifically find, just didn't provide the information I needed.

Thanks Doug, I needed that!

Whether you have the intro version of Manga Studio or the Pro version (EX), you will enjoy having this book handy. The cheat sheet alone is worth it..! ~8) As with all the Dummies volumes I possess the editorial staff has done a good job of helping the author outline and bring to clear focus the elements most needed to provide you with the answers to 'those mind numbing puzzles' we who enjoy such things as beating our heads into our keyboard at times, come across in our search to produce the 'COMIC of all comics'... I learned of this book on the Content Paradise Forum, having purchased a couple of e-frontiers products and desiring more input from fellow users of the Manga Studio software. It is only from those that have been working with the software for a bit that you get the nuances that are not normally shown face up,.. and thankfully, Doug had help from others like 'pencilkiller' as well with the main info. Get this book if you have Manga Studio (the debut version or the pro) or even if you are thinking of getting MS! Get this book, it will give you a HUGE head start. Good Job Doug!
One P.S. This software is NOT just for comix! It can be used for book illustration, architectural illustration, and commercial graphics (even logo design!) in combination with other graphics softwares such as PhotoShop or the GIMP, etc., so this book is invaluable in unlocking the 'keys to the kingdom' (so-to-speak)!

Asian Dumplings

I have no idea what made me buy this book as I had taken out several books on dumplings from the library last year and they were completely inadequate, confusing, uninspiring and poorly conceived. I couldn't even look inside this one to see what was in there, right? But, overcome with a desire for dumplings, I splurged.

The dumplings I have made from Andrea Nguyen's book have been frighteningly delicious. The information is clearly presented with good line drawings to show you how and lovely photos to show what you're supposed to end up with. The ingredient lists are all minimal and easily obtained. You will make no large investments in items you will use once. (Don't you hate that about some cookbooks?) There are so many to chose from, the only problem will be making up your mind which one tonight. The door to delectable dumplings is now open.

This is a wonderful book. Thank you, Ms Nguyen.

A MUST FOR DUMPLING ENTHUSIASTS!

This book surpassed my expectation in terms of content and depth of the main subject matter: Asian Dumplings! I accidentally came upon Andrea Nguyen's website when I was looking for the perfect bao recipe. I have been to many cities in mainland China where dumplings are what is bread to us here in the West but Ms. Nguyen generously touches in this book the multitude of cultures woven in the dumpling culture.
I frequently visited Yangzhou in the past 10 years and while there, the owners of the factory I was working with would bring me to a very old place quite well known for all types of dumplings. If I am not mistaken the name of the restaurant is Fuchun Chaze which was established in 1885. This is where I tasted my first crab soup dumpling thinking it was soup with crab dumplings. At first I was not so sure what to do with it when it came with a straw, not knowing that the crab soup was inside the dumpling! This place was steeped with tradition and I always looked forward to having breakfast there (courtesy of my host who pulled strings to get a reservation every time). It always fascinated me watching the cooks make all the different types of shumai and baos through a glass window. I felt so privileged to have been to such a place.
This book will be a must in my cookbook collection and will be cherished as I go through the many recipes that I would love to try. I could only wish that all cookbook authors could be like Ms. Nguyen: clear and concise contents, notes on useful tips for success, enough pictures to whet up your appetite but not too much that the instructions fall short. I bao to you Andrea, and thank you for writing such a wonderful cookbook!

Perfect work on dumplings

What Sushi: Taste and Techniques is for sushi, Asian Dumplings: Mastering Gyoza, Spring Rolls, Samosas, and More is to dumplings. Concise, but with all the proper information so that anyone from a beginner to a master can benefit from a book that's light enough for travel.

The ingredient list is expansive and detailed, with not only a very comprehensive list of authentic ingredients but plenty of ideas on substitutions or where to search for items when you aren't local to them. The equipment lists are simiarly accomplished, expansive but with plenty of information on substitutes or where to look when you want to invest. Beginners will find plenty of tips on how to get by with cheap or borrowed equipment (use a wooden dowel as a dumpling rolling pin) while masters will find hints about all the traditional or exotic items that could take preparation to the next level.

The basics are handled very well, with "mother doughs" for all the wrappers presented so that you can be prepared to stuff a given wrapper with whatever you might want. By the time you get to the actual recipes, the book has already given you all the necessary tools so that this is merely a chance to practice the skills you've already read up on. This is the way any great work about a specific cuisine should be.

I prepared potstickers and soup dumplings according to the book. I admit my wrappers need some work, and with practics will certainly hold more, so the ratio probably isn't that far off. As beginner you may want to be prepared to refridgerate some leftovers until you can find a home for them, but otherwise the flavors are definitely there.
