Skullsworn, by Brian Staveley

Brian Staveley’s new standalone returns to the critically acclaimed Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne universe, following a priestess attempting to join the ranks of the God of Death.

Pyrre Lakatur doesn’t like the word skullsworn. It fails to capture the faith and grace, the peace and beauty of her devotion to the God of Death. She is not, to her mind, an assassin, not a murderer--she is a priestess. At least, she will be a priestess if she manages to pass her final trial.

The problem isn’t the killing. Pyrre has been killing and training to kill, studying with some of the most deadly men and women in the world, since she was eight. The problem, strangely, is love. To pass her Trial, Pyrre has ten days to kill the ten people enumerated in an ancient song, including "the one you love / who will not come again."

Pyrre is not sure she’s ever been in love. If she were a member of a different religious order, a less devoted, disciplined order, she might cheat. The Priests of Ananshael, however, don’t look kindly on cheaters. If Pyrre fails to find someone to love, or fails to kill that someone, they will give her to the god.

Pyrre’s not afraid to die, but she hates to quit, hates to fail, and so, with a month before her trial begins, she returns to the city of her birth, the place where she long ago offered an abusive father to the god and abandoned a battered brother―in the hope of finding love...and ending it on the edge of her sword.

"A complex and richly detailed world filled with elite soldier-assassins, mystic warrior monks, serpentine politics, and ancient secrets." ―Library Journal, starred review, on The Emperor's Blades

About the Author
James Hadley Chase has been hailed as 'the thriller maestro of the generation', 'the king of all thriller writers' and a 'master of the art of his deception'. During his life, he wrote some eighty titles, each one thrilling and delighting his readers with their fast-moving tales of murder, intrigue, blackmail and espionage. Hadley Chase was born Ren Brabazon Raymond and he also wrote under the names of James L Dochery, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall. He was born Ren Brabazon Raymond in London in 1906. Whilst working as a bookseller he was inspired by American crime-writers and went on to write his own thrillers and gangster stories, also set in the United States. Success came with No Orchids for Miss Blandish which was published in 1939 and was one of the most successful books of the thirties, selling several million copies. George Orwell described it as 'a brilliant piece of writing with hardly a wasted word or a jarring note anywhere'. It was subsequently dramatised and performed on London's West End, and also made into a film. Chase went on to gain popularity for his numerous other gangster stories, and by the end of the war he was one of Britain's most successful thriller writers. During his career he travelled widely and produced some ninety books, also writing under the names of James L Dochery, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall, although ironically he only visited the USA late in life, relying previously upon knowledge gleaned from dictionaries of slang and encyclopedias for the novels set there. His interests included photography (he was up to professional standard), reading and listening to classical music, being a particularly enthusiastic opera lover.

Hail! The safest Bank
By Michael Churchill Dibulo
It is called under the icon "The Safest Bank" when it was lunched in an up-and-coming town on the Pacific coast, a jet plane conveying the united states president landed at the roof of the bank the first day as it was opened and other bank executives were present at the commissioning of the safest bank in the world. It was Farrell Brannigan, President of the National Californian Bank that built it with the safest security ever in the world; he is an extremely successful man, he has received worldwide publicity for constructing the safest bank in the world, and 'the safest bank in the world' as hailed. But Brannigan's success came at a price and he made many enemies on his way up the ladder. It seems that one of them is now set on revenge and determined to destroy both the bank and Brannigan himself. This time it could even involve the programmer of his security proof system. Hail chase!

Old-Fashioned, Cartoonish, Implausible Chasean Rehash
By Faterson
OK, this may be a thoroughly enjoyable book if you've never read a James Hadley Chase thriller before. If you have, then you're less likely to be impressed.

What can be said about the femme fatale in Chase? You just *know* she's going to turn out to be the treacherous one, dooming the narrator... In the best Chase books, you don't mind knowing this beforehand; but it does seem to be too much of a give-away in _My Laugh Comes Last_. Yes, the customary, pleasant plot twist does arrive at the very end as we've grown to expect from Chase, but this time, the book's ending does not seem to have deeper implications; the ending struck me as rather flat, given we'd had a good idea about the femme fatale all along.

The book was released in 1977, but feels remarkably old-fashioned even for those days; it's a late work by Chase, and you feel as if Chase was more at home in the 1950s and 1960s. Yes, I'm not going to judge bank security measures in 1977 by 2013 standards, but even so: it just defies belief that a supposedly "safest bank in the world" would only be guarded by a single watchman the entire weekend (!), and even this guard would be making his regular rounds, leaving the entrance to the bank completely unguarded for longish stretches of time. Did they have no security cameras in the late 1970s? Perhaps not, but even so: the plot seems so far-fetched it makes you shake your head. So, there are a couple of invisible beams in the lobby of "the safest bank in the world", and after you carefully crawl underneath them, you're free to spend your entire weekend inside the bank building, even inside its main vault, completely unnoticed and unhindered? Erm, I wonder!

The bank security issues make the plot sound hard to believe, but it's not better with character motivation. Yes, the narrator gets predictably infatuated by the femme fatale -- even so, it's difficult to believe he would throw away everything he had professionally achieved in his life up to that point, just to "get on the run" with his beloved, and remain fugitive with her for the rest of his days. Really?! Why not approach the police instead, and come clean, especially after having collected lots of evidence against the real culprits? Wasn't the very first thing the narrator wanted to achieve (when the initial blackmail attempts were made), the rescue of his professional career? It seemed that this level of improbable infatuation and recklessness on the part of the narrator was necessary because otherwise the book's plot just wouldn't work. And so, the narrator's infatuation with the femme fatale strikes you more as an artificial plot device, than as a psychologically credible state of mind.

There's another thing that looks like a major plot hole in _My Laugh Comes Last_: one of the novel's characters makes a provision against getting killed; should that happen, certain documents are arranged to come to light. Yet this character actually *does* get murdered in the novel, but the documents do *not* get published. Why? Chase doesn't explain. Perhaps the lack of logic in this did not occur to him, nor to his editor. And so, the incriminating documents, instead of getting published, patiently wait in the bank's vault so they can get captured by multiple parties ("McGuffin" plot device). Again, you get the feeling that this is not about reality, but just another plot device gone awry.

In addition to that, the thugs in _My Life Comes Last_ sometimes appear to be inadvertently comical -- cartoonish instead of menacing.

Yet James Hadley Chase is a supremely skilled writer, isn't he? And so, despite all its shortcomings, _My Laugh Comes Last_ is a fast read and can certainly be felt "enjoyable" by fans of the thriller genre.

Proud Servant: The Memoirs of a Career Ambassador, by Ellis Briggs

Ellis O. Briggs (1899-1976) entered the Foreign Service of the United States in 1925. During the next 37 years he was ambassador to seven countries; the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Czechoslovakia, Korea, Peru, Brazil, and Greece. An eighth appointment, to Spain, was cancelled when he retired due to illness. He also served in Cuba, Chile, Liberia, and China. His memoirs are an exuberant record of a gifted diplomat. Briggs reached the highest rank attainable in the Foreign ServiceCareer Ambassadorand received the Medal of Freedom from President Eisenhower for his service in wartime Korea. He gained a reputation for successfully handling large diplomatic missions and dealing with difficult situations. But his greatest virtue was his honesty, his passion to report things just as he saw them and make policy recommendations regardless of conventional wisdom in Washington. He employed high sense of humor, often to devastating effect, on bureaucrats at home as well as adversaries abroad. His strong views about policy sometimes placed him in conflict with others; fellow Dartmouth graduate Nelson Rockefeller had him fired from the Foreign Service because of disagreements (Briggs soon returned to the Service). A down-to-earth New Englander with an abiding love of the outdoors, Briggs was devoted to his wife and family as well as to his country. Proud Servant is full of insights about the practice of diplomacy in this century and provides a fascinating account of the modern Foreign Service.

Life as an Ambassador
By Nicole Lloyd
This book is brimming with facts that although sometimes aren't necessary, but all in good standards. What I enjoyed most about this book was the road he took in order to become an ambassador. It is one of the more detailed journies of this type that is written in a book. Some of the parts in this book that deal with his diplomatic policy are hard to understand, but for the most part i was able to understand somewhat what he was trying to convey. This book did lag in a few parts, it is less entertaining and more informative...it did take me a while to finish reading the book. I woudl recommend it because it seems to give a true heart felt perspective on what life is like to be a career ambassador.

It's a good book, but we (the Phlebotomy class) have found some of the test question have the wrong answer. Also one or two procedures are not quite correct. But the school wanted $80.00 for the book.

Geometry and Meaning (Lecture Notes), by Dominic Widdows

From Pythagoras's harmonic sequence to Einstein's theory of relativity, geometric models of position, proximity, ratio, and the underlying properties of physical space have provided us with powerful ideas and accurate scientific tools. Currently, similar geometric models are being applied to another type of space—the conceptual space of information and meaning, where the contributions of Pythagoras and Einstein are a part of the landscape itself. The rich geometry of conceptual space can be glimpsed, for instance, in internet documents: while the documents themselves define a structure of visual layouts and point-to-point links, search engines create an additional structure by matching keywords to nearby documents in a spatial arrangement of content. What the Geometry of Meaning provides is a much-needed exploration of computational techniques to represent meaning and of the conceptual spaces on which these representations are founded.

A wonderful work
By Konstantinos-N
Geometry and meaning is an amazing book. It discusses NLP (natural language processing) and how common geometric ideas and theories can be applied in NLP with often excellent or quite satisfactory results.

The strongest point of the book is its clarity. Widdows has a gift in writing. For a book that attempts to convey so many ideas it is surprisingly refreshing to see that it accomplishes its task with the minimal amount of jargon (if any at all indeed). Besides the main text, the insets with historic or scientific references are very enjoyable as well.

I would have personally preferred some more detail on the methods developed for similarity and distance in hierarchies in chapter 4 (there is only the formulae from Leacock's and Resnik's algorithms) as well as a more in-depth coverage of the word-document vector model in chapter 5. Still these details can be found by consulting the very detailed and carefully compiled bibliography at the end of the book.

With the exceptions of NLP experts who may find such a book rather simplistic and a reference to things they already know, I suspect that the rest of us who want a clear and consise introduction to the field will greatly benefit from it. And at such a reasonable price I dont see why any one interested in the subject wouldnt want this gem in their library.

A related book which makes a case for the application of geometry in the way humans reason and judge similarities between objects and concepts is Gardenfors' Conceptual Spaces--another wonderful book--albeit slightly more difficult to understand.

A polymathic gem
By P. R. Van Emburg
This book is a pleasant introduction to natural language processing (NLP) as used, for example, in the design and operation of internet search engines. In addition, it identifies a number of interdomanial connections, the most interesting one I consider to be that between NLP and quantum theory. Quantum theory is a subject many intellectuals once in their life pledge themselves to attempt to get a grasp of. To increase their chance of success they intend to restrict their effort to the theory's core. Typically, they cannot find suitable educational material. Texts on quantum mechanics appear to inextricably link the imagined core with a large body of structure perceived by the aspirant grasper as excess baggage. In postponing their attack their notion grows that the core is mathematical. Consequently, they resolve to attempt to get a grasp of the kind of math involved. Their intended first move is to learn just enough of it to be able to decide whether or not to immerse themselves in it to achieve a more complete understanding. Accordingly, they want a simple but informative exposition of what the mathematical core of quantum theory 'looks like'. Dominic Widdows most admirably succeeds in providing an essential part of such an exposition.

His masterstroke is using the geometry and the logic used in both NLP and quantum theory in combination with showing how logic can be defined with reference to geometry. Everybody is familiar with language, most of us are with the use of internet search engines, and many remember what a vector is from physics diagrams including forces, velocities etc. All of us know from zero to three-dimensional Euclidian space and some types of curved spaces, e.g. spherical and saddle-shaped. Widdows does a superb job to exploit this knowledge to the full. I found his book valuable both in giving a concise view of methods used in relevant domains and as a means for orienting myself for further study of NLP as well as quantum logic. Another quality of the book is that the material is given a historical background, not profusely but just stimulatingly, and with the effect on the reader that historical digressions in texts on exact subjects tend to have, a synergetic mix of broadening and relaxing the mind.

To put this review in a proper perspective, although it may temper its reader's enthusiasm, I must admit that I possibly represent the perfect audience targeted by the book in the sense of being well-prepared to appreciate its content. This is partly accidental and thus can be seen as a flaw in the book's didactics. To explain, having mentioned in the previous paragraph high-school material necessary for grasping Widdows' topics concerning vectors, geometrical spaces and logic, it has to be noted that this does not prepare for his treatment of logic associated with lattices and concepts. The following implies that I already had knowledge of the latter subject before I read "Geometry and Meaning". After finishing my study of the chapter on formal concept analysis in B. A. Davey and H. A. Priestley's "Introduction to Lattices and Order" (2002) it struck me that Aristotle's attribution of distinct pairs of qualities to four elements might well be the first example of an implicitly defined concept lattice. Having worked out its math and graphics, I supplied the keywords |earth fire air water concept lattice| to Google and was referred to Widdows' book in the topmost result that the search engine returned.

What immediately enticed me to order it was that it was said to have a foreword by Pentti Kanerva. A year after its publication I had bought Kanerva's "Sparse Distributed Memory" (1988) on Douglas R. Hofstadter's recommendation in its flap text, the first part of which runs: "This book, because of its pristine mathematical beauty and its great clarity, excited me deeply when I read it, and I believe it will have the same effect on many others, whether they are ... [specialists in the same scientific domain as its author] or not." Indeed, Kanerva's and Widdows' books share important qualities. There is a positive way to define the most important of these, which, however, is predominantly ignored, being perceived by many as painful and, moreover, disparaged as unproductive. It is the books' demonstration of the superiority, the power and fertility of what I would call their authors' generalistic ability (avoiding use of the more obscure term interdisciplinarity). In my view, science needs precisely this ability of scientists, their use of which makes them polymaths, to be made as productive as possible (realizing that the personal building of the ability depends on possession of a rare talent restricting the number of scientists capable of attaining it). The clarity of Kanerva's and Widdows' books shows their talent for exposition. Its marriage to polymathy spawns the best educational material. In the past two decades, exposition of scientific subjects has acquired improved and novel tools. Widdows light-footedly equipped his text with shaded special-interest boxes and web links. Effective as these may be, they raise the issue of publishing texts in the category of "Geometry and Meaning" completely as web documents, which allow use of a much greater variety of expository tools. Kanerva in his foreword rightly stresses the importance of math in science. But today still none of the major websites collecting mathematical subjects, MathWorld, PlanetMath, and Wikipedia, even remotely presents the best possible quality in knowledge transmission, for example, only very sparsely containing instructive animations despite ideas for them readily suggesting themselves. Perfected with regard to the indicated quality, they could valuably support books like "Geometry and Meaning" as references for its math.

Science education is greatly enriched by books like "Geometry and Meaning". Incongruously, any acknowledgement of this by representatives of the larger societal institutions is at odds with the observation that the building of their authors' generalistic ability is not supported by them, which is particularly apparent in local communities. On the contrary, it is usually discouraged to protect social-psychological interests, every pertinent entity, beginning with family and continuing to include even university faculty, perversely controlling the individual whose aspiration is perceived as deviant. The simple explanation for this treatment is that the ability in question, as its product polymathy, is sour grapes for the exclusive specialists who are a majority almost everywhere. Fortunately, today's internet technology points to the only feasible way to neutralize its effect. Like "Geometry and Meaning", simply publish web links to resources allowing the generalistic-ability builder to educate himself, resources that probe an entire world like that of science, sufficient to provide a solid cognitive foundation, as well as efficient means for orientation.

Keeping science in focus, the proposed self-education resource contains the hint for NLP research to actively involve itself, with its methods and techniques, in a synthetic effort to sanitize the language that is used in science. This effort could also be a response to Widdows' critical remark that (p. 137, footnote) "... the excessive jargonization of all contemporary fields is getting out of hand ... the proliferation of science itself scattering us in a technological Tower of Babel". I imagine a balanced three-part activity consisting of (1) using NLP to rationalize scientific language, (2) searching on internet for self-education resources, and (3) building generalistic ability (not only by an individual but also by workgroups in science). Science is creative, giving it an attractive element of magic. Clear exposition reveals the reality of this element by outlining objects a significant part of whose generation is not objective because it is the unobservable work of the mind. A polymathic scientist can produce superior outlines if he can integrate the various domanial approaches he masters. But only if he combined his integrations with the talent for presenting them in the way Widdows shows in his "Geometry and Meaning" could he present a work of comparable caliber.

Great overview of NLP and geometric methods
By P. H. Adams
This is a great overview of NLP and various geometric methods of linguistic analysis. I do research in the field of computational linguistics and it was refreshing to see how Widdows was able to distill the essence of many important, influential papers and present these topics in an interesting and engaging manner. He includes numerous examples, graphs, and other supplemental material that do an effective job at getting his points across. Those with little formal mathematical background might find some parts intimidating, but if they stick it out, they'll find it to be worth the effort.
