About the Author
Rita L. Irwin is professor and head of the Department of Curriculum Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Her research interests include in-service arts teacher education, curriculum studies, artists-in-schools programs, and First Nations and gender issues. She engages in action research, case study, image-based research, and many forms of arts-based educational inquiry. Her artistic pursuits are autobiographical in nature and have most recently been concerned with landscape.

Alex de Cosson has worked as a professional sculptor exhibiting nationally and internationally for over twenty-five years. He holds an M.Ed. from Brock University, an M.F.A. from York University, and a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Alex has taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design since 1989 and at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver since 1999. He has been an active member of Inner City Angels, an organization dedicated to bringing art to school children, and has worked extensively with artists-in-schools programs. His research interests include arts-based and autobiographical arenas.

This book is great for artists, teachers, people interested in art therapy, healing and self expression. Each chapter shares a personal story from a different individual about her/his use of art in their lives. It is an easy read and very insightful.

brilliant beginning but better stuff to follow

At the time of its first appearance in 1985 Between Men was viewed as an important intervention into Feminist as well as Gay and Lesbian studies. It was an important book because it argued that "sexuality" and "desire" were not ahistorical phenomenon but carefully managed social constructs. This insight (that actually originated with Michael Foucault) is often viewed as anti-humanist or post-humanist because it argues that men and women are simply the products of patriarchal power relations over which they have no control. By mobilizing Foucault's theories of the history of sexuality Sedgwick re-fashions Feminism and Gay and Lesbian Studies to make it seem as though Feminism and Gay and Lesbian studies are ideally situated to continue those interventions into the history of sexuality begun by Foucault. Sedgwick's own concern in this book is homosocality and this book's contribution to that topic is invaluable and still provides an excellent starting point for any foray into that topic. Her views on homosociality were groundbreaking, however, Sedgwick's book is famous mainly for its introduction which critiques current research agendas (including radical feminist agendas)as well as spells out the research agendas that she feels Gay and Lesbian studies should pursue. Its a twenty page introduction that to this day remains the best synopsis of academic feminisms (especially radical feminism) as well as the best articulation to date of the need for a new kind of discipline that can make use of the best part of existing feminisms and continue to evolve Gay and Lesbian Studies in productive directions. In that twenty page introduction Sedgwick lays out an academic template that has retroactively been labeled Queer Studies. For that introduction this book deserves five stars. The rest of the book is dedicated to new readings of classic Eng Lit texts and will only be of interest and of use to students of English literature.

Overall the book is appealing because Sedgwick draws a map that is in fact usable. The pitfall of this book is that she uses this map to explain everything. This is of course a charge that can be made against any theorist that believes that their new theory holds the secret to history, to desire, to sexuality, to subjectivity, to relationships of all kinds, to every social situation and to every literary work. Its only later that we begin to see that any theory also has blind spots.

Like Foucault Sedgwick treats "masculinity" and "femininity" and "lesbian" and "homosexual" not as natural and stable categories but as historically contingent and shifting categories. This is fine so far as it goes but it also means that in order to challenge these categories and effect structural changes to the way we view gender and sexuality the academic must argue from some privileged position that allows them access to the ways society shapes its subjects and also allows some privileged insight into how historical change occurs. Again this is true of all theory. An academic that suggests that we are all shaped by history must also realize that their own views are shaped by their own historical-academic-personal situatedness and to her credit Sedgwick does just that in her later, and much more interesting because much more self-critical, Touching Feeling.

In that book Sedgwick evolves what amounts to a relational ethics as well as an ethics of academic life that recognizes that various forms of relationality and knowledges are practices that produce affects. If Between Men is a book that makes big claims, Touching Feeling is abook that analyzes the affects of such claims. Touching Feeling is thus a book that concerns itself less with cracking the sex and gender codes of the past (although she does some of that in this book as well) than in thoughtfully analyzing how practices, habits, and beliefs affect the quality of our lives. In many ways Touching Feeling marks a departure from some of her previous work and a return to a much more traditionally humanist approach (a return that was foreshadowed by Foucault's own return to ethics and humanism in his late work). It would seem that Sedgwick is saying that being fully human means not living in others codes and ideologies (nor dedicating ones life to cracking those codes and/or evolving new ones--which is to perpetually postpone the living of one's own life in the present) but living in critical relation to those codes and ideologies and evolving knowledge practices that are nourishing to one's self,one's students, friends and communities.

In Between Men it is obvious that Sedgwick is not any ordinary academic. That book was a brilliant beginning and in it we can see the habits and tendencies of mind that make all of her books unique and appealing. Touching Feeling is the fully evolved realization of those habits and tendencies of mind and the book that I think she will be remembered for. Between Men helped initiate one trend in academic life, Queer Studies; Touching Feeling is already shaping another trend in academic thought, and one that I think will remain current for some time to come: the ethics of relationality.

The origins of queer theory

This book is an essential antecedent to contemporary queer theory, arguing that the development of the public sphere depended upon a sublimated yet necessarily erotic "male homosocial desire." Once we have finished encountered that stunning and revolutionary idea, this is a work of literary criticism that will be of little interest to non-scholars. Sedgwick has proven herself more than adequate to the task of adapting her ideas to a larger academic and educated general audience; indeed, she is one of the most provocative cultural critics of our generation. But not here. I suggest some of Sedgwick's later work, especially "The Epistemology of the Closet" and "Tendencies."

A Mixed Bag for MBTI-philes

As a layman fascinated with all things MBTI, I picked up this book with eagerness, hoping it might give deeper insights into what other books and Websites discussed, or tread new ground. I was somewhat disappointed.
The authors DO start with some fairly clear, insightful examples and definitions of the MBTI categories, including a wonderful story about an E father and an I son. However, they soon veer from clarity and insight into what I can only call high-level "mush" -- paragraph upon paragraph of needless exposition and feel-good truisms. As noted in another review, Pearman and Albritton's prose is an inconsistent mix of clear, focused text and fluffy, platitude-filled philosophy on having appreciation and understanding for those different from you. While I do appreciate their emphasis -- not stereotyping others and working hard not to just understand them in an academic way, the writing is simply too "lite" and jarring with the text that is specifically MBTI-centered. When they remain on-topic about MBTI and how types interact, the book is good (though not anything drastically different/deeper than other books in the marketplace).
They do offer some very good insights into what the different types value, especially in regards to communications. This is where the book is most valuable -- as a beginning point for understanding HOW and WHY you communicate the way do, and ways to bridge differences with others. However, their many charts tend to get a bit numbing after a while, and some don't do a very good job of show clearer delineation between the 16 types. And for whatever reason, the authors completely ignore Keirsey's distinction between character and temperament; using it could have helped them carry their thesis farther and with more punch.
Worth reading -- or at least skimming -- if you really enjoy MBTI-related material, but for those new to MBTI or looking for more practical, user-friendly texts, I recommend looking into Keirsey's or Kroeger's works.

A great book for understanding business relationships

I've known my MBTI for many years, so what? It wasn't until I read this book that I understood all the implications. The book goes beyond just explaining your personality type, but actually provides useful information regarding how to deal with each. Information is displayed in great succinct charts covering such aspects as: expression of attitudes, motivators, inner tensions, development recommendations, how the type gathers/absorbs information, valued relationship qualities, as well as hot buttons, prejudices, and other issues. I purchased two copies, one to keep and one to distribute among my team.

Instead of just telling you that the MBTI exists and providing unsubstantiated examples, this book explains the theories behind type classification, giving you the background necessary to make justifications about the role it should play in your life. Rather than encouraging the use of type theory to put people in categories, "I'm Not Crazy..." provides the opporunity for you to broaden your understanding of the motivations behind the thoughts and actions of those that are close to you.

About the Author
Vlado Damjanovski is an internationally renowned CCTV expert. He was born in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, and since 1987 he lives in Sydney, Australia. Vlado has a degree in Electronics Engineering from the University “Kiril i Metodij” in Macedonia, and he has specialized in Television and CCTV. His Thesis in 1982 was on CCD Cameras, 10 years before they became commercially available.

Vlado is an author, inventor, a lecturer and a CCTV expert, known to the Australian and international CCTV industry.

A summary of the ever-evolving CCTV knowledge that Vlado possess first appeared in 1995 in his first published book - called simply "CCTV." This was one of the first truly complete reference manuals on the subject of CCTV. All subsequent editions, 1999, 2005, and the latest in 2013, have kept expanding with all the new and ever-evolving technology. The books cover all that a CCTV specialist needs to know. Many have referred to the book as “The CCTV Bible,” so that even the official Russian translation of it carries such a title.

In addition to writing books and conducting seminars, Vlado is involved in designing and commissioning CCTV systems, often pioneering new trends and technologies. One of the world first digital CCTV system designs was done by Vlado for the Star City Casino in 1997, where gaming disputes are sorted out immediately at the gaming tables. Then, in 2003, another new design was proposed for the Sands Casino in Macao - first in the world utilizing digital matrix switching of over 1,200 cameras and digital recorders.

Vlado was the editor and publisher of the international magazine “CCTV focus,” from 1999 till 2006.

Vlado is currently the chairman of the CCTV Standards sub-committee of Australia and New Zealand, and he has contributed immensely in creating the latest Australian and New Zealand CCTV standards known as AS4806.1, AS4806.2 and AS4806.3.

The CCTV test chart and the programmable test pattern generator are some of the original and unique products developed by Vlado and his company, and they are used in various measurement and quantifying CCTV system performance.

Vlado is also known for his photographic works, albeit as an amateur. He has prepared a number of sole exhibitions in his native Macedonia as well as Australia, published his work in many magazines and books, and won numerous awards (www.damjanovski.com).

It's about time

If you are involved in the design of security CCTV systems, you would be remiss not to read this book. It clearly explains the physical and electronic science and how it relates to design theory.

This is an Excellent book. It presents a lot of useful information and is perfect for professionals with a technical background. It doesn't go too deep into the theory but it tells just you what you need to know and gives you an idea of where to look for further information. It's expensive, but it's worth the money.

Outstanding Resource

This is an excellent book for someone new to CCTV and who wants to know how things tick. I highly recommend this book for technicians, Security Managers and "techies".
Vlado does an excellent job explaining some very technical aspects of complex items in a way that is easy to follow.
