Not for everyone! But if you want to be on the edge of your seat and delve into the mind of a psychiatrist and a patient then you will love this book as much as I do!! Cannot wait for the next book

I Was Transfixed.

This story was absolutely amazing. Alec is a very riveting character, as is his doctor, Frank Harlan. At first I found that I was kind of creeped out by Alec. However, later I began to kind of understand where he's coming from. I was totally immersed in this thrilling read from beginning to end. The premise was extraordinary and the story was wonderfully executed (which also happens in the story :D) and I would definitely recommend this book. It is, without a doubt, super chilling.

This story is all inspiring to read. It is dark and mysterious. Reading this story will keep you on your toes, making you want to read more just to find out what is next. The author of this book is in my top 5 Favorited authors to read. AM Snead has written a lot of amazing stories that grabs your attention and keeps you begging for more. I highly recommend reading this story.

The fifth edition includes a wealth of new and revised chapters that reflect developments in the field in the years since the fourth edition was published. The sections on anatomy of the periodontium and the basic sciences underlying tooth and implant attachment have been expanded, as has the section on pathology and pathogenesis of periodontitis. Very good and thorough book on periodontology

Very good and thorough book on periodontology. I like that the book refers to a lot of studies instead of making it's own conclusions on subjects that has not yet been proved. The negative side is that the book is very heavy to read. Sometimes you just want to be presented the facts. Chapters dealing with treatment planning and treatment of periodontitis is based too much on examples and too little on actual guidelines. But all in all a good book.

Oh Courtney!

Ok, I realize this is very old, outdated, and Koontz' first major publication. It was a quick and easy read, and very predictable yet still enjoyable enough. I am currently on a mission to read all of Koontz' works. I just read Demon Seed,and now Shattered. I am reading them all in order. Although I should have saved Demon Seed for when it was updated. Which is why I am leaving Winter Moon and Icebound for their revised dates and moving on to Night Chills next.

Solid, but Very Dated Thriller

I remember reading "Shattered" ages ago, and really enjoying it. Seeing as how it clocks in at just over 200 pages, I recently picked it up again to pass the time on a lazy Sunday. The good news is that the base story of "Shattered" is still a gripping thriller. A man begins a cross-country drive from Philadelphia to San Francisco in order to make a fresh start in a new job with his new wife. Tagging along for the ride is the man's new "younger brother" through marriage. It's a chance for the two men to bond, get to know each other and prepare themselves for the momentus changes coming their way. Unfortunately, they've nabbed the attention of homicidal maniac who plans to waylay and murder them somewhere along their long journey.
It's a fun story, and as stated it's just barely over 200 pages, meaning you could retire the entire thing in half a day, or spread it out over two lunch hours. The story is reminicent of the films "Duel" and "Joy Ride". There is lots of action, and Koontz does a great job of ratcheting up the suspense as the story unfolds.
The only drawback to "Shattered", which first hit bookshelves in 1973, is that it is terribly dated. Quite a bit of the novel deals with the protagonist running into prejudice against "hippies". References to Vietnam and Charles Whitman's sniper shootings, as well as Charlie Manson and Richard Speck as recent events also tie the novel to a certain time in American history, which is now three decades past. The police in the story discuss the "freaks" tearing apart the moral fabric of the country seems pretty antiquated now as well.
I still recommend this novel, but would love to see Koontz update this story as he has done with "Twilight Eyes".

Too many loose ends

First of all, if you want a book you can read fast this is your book. It's a very short novel, one of Koont's first writings (which you can immediately tell by repeated references to the looks of the main characters, and the concept people, specially those in law enforcement, have of them). I did like the fast read and to tell the truth, I was glad to be able to read the novel after learning about it a few years ago, because I found the synopsis rather interesting.
The problem with this book however is that it leaves many loose ends and as fast as it goes it really avoids a deeper approach to the story. Many readers are reminded of Duel, I was also remimded of the movie Joyride, but to tell the truth we never get a real nailbiting, mind shredding chase on the highway itself, except when the van catches up with our heros in a deserted road. The book is broken down in six parts, one for each of six days (monday, tuesday...), but you start reading that they get a glimpse of the van on tuesday morning, they get scared about it, lose it, and on the next page it's already tuesday night.
Tension is better built on the second part of the book, specially towards the end but then the ending is too abrupt. As in Whispers this book has no epilogue, but you start feeling shoved to the exit.
One of the things I didn't like, and which I realized a little while after finishing the book, was the waste of time with the cop and the forensics technician. I remember a scene in the book when the cop is sitting at a restaurant (or a cafe, something along those lines) and the technician approches him all of a sudden and starts inquiring about the case. I had this image of the worried cop and the Gil Grissom-like tech coming up with a mindblowing way of how to catch the maniac, which would lead to a great climax, but then all of a sudden we never hear from them again. They are completely forgotten, so I don't really know why they were given the importance they were given in the first place.
Not the best Koontz I've read but it keeps you entertained for a while. If instead you wanna try a more interesting short novel by Koontz I would recommend The Voice of the Night.

Nice and easy to read

I expected more technical information. This will be useful for a person that is considering to care any pet. I would like pictures , instructions and examples of enclosures. More in depht with scientific facts on feeding and husbandry, vaccines, etc

The author gives his point of view on Kinkajou conduct but it would be wise to warn anyone considering to adopt this kind of pet that it will be very demanding.

They are nocturnal so you will need to stay asleep for a lot of time. They have special nutritional requirements and feeding is not cheap for them. They are messy . And you have to know that they can attack and inflict severe wounds for no special reason.

If you get attacked the worst thing to do is to punish the animal. All the trust that was build in the relationship can be lost for months! And they can take revenge in a very close future. You read right, you can expect the Kinkajou to attack for no reason again. Look up Paris Hilton pet kinkajou and the reason she is no longer taking care for one.
They seem to be very sensitive to odors , unknown odors.
Anyway, if you want one just because they look cute, get a dog.
It is a responsability that will set you back at least 20 years.
As a veterinarian And working with wildlife for more than 25 years I had the opportunity to know them really closer than most people.

I'm not sure when I saw a Kinkajou for the first time as a child. If it was on TV or when my parents took me to the zoo. Whichever the case, I loved them at first sight.

Several years later, I found out that you can keep them as pets, and they are currently becoming increasingly popular. One look at them and you can understand why. Kinkajous, also known as honey bears, are rainforest animals related to the family of raccoons, but not to be confused with ferrets, as they may seem similar.

During my research on the Kinkajous, I came across Jennifer Jones' book, "Keeping A Kinkajou: A Complete Owner's Guide To Caring For Pet Kinkajous" which enlightened me about all the details about keeping and caring for a Kinkajou. I must say, there are very few books that cover this topic and even fewer that do so in such a complete way.

I really enjoyed reading this very well written novel which tells the tale of unusual friendships in the 1950s. Jasper Jones is a half caste aboriginal teen who is always in trouble and gets blamed for everything that goes wrong in the town. Charlie Bucktin is the son of a very proper schoolteacher and his ever so uprightious wife. When Jasper comes to Charlie's window one night asking for his help, Charlie can't resist the lure of why the town troublemaker needs him.
When he discovers the reason why Jasper needs him it rocks his world and so a friendship of partner-in-crime develops. Charlie longs to tell him best friend, Vietnamese Jeffrey Lu, who is hated by the town louts, who call him "Cong" and dispite his prowess as a cricketer, dont allow him to be included in their games.
Then there's the daughters of the equally righteous Mayor, Laura and Eliza Wishart. When Laura goes missing, the eccentric hermit, Jack Lionel gets the blame and the police immediately assume Jasper knows something about it. Woven together, these characters create a web of intrigue and mystery. Jay Jay.

Keeping up with the Jones

An engaging tale that uses the death of a teenage girl to examine the loss of innocence in rural, mid-70s Australia. I was reminded of Shark Net, Stand By Me, Blue Velvet and To Kill A Mockingboard (the latter because the author kept bringing it up). It is Winton-esque in tone. Although this is a more meandering narrative, which was probably the intent, to reflect life in country areas. The tensions simmer, and simmer, frustratingly at times, as the narrator seeks meaning and significance, expanding on events and descriptions. Adolescence, coming of age, sexuality, racism, domestic abuse, incest, infidelity, and violence are explored on personal, family, community and national levels. When it boils over, it does so with an urgency and inventiveness that is captivating and believable. It's the lulls between that can make you feel like you spent a week in this town one afternoon. That may be its greatest strength and, at times, a small weakness.

Absolutely brilliant. This is an Australian young adult novel but don't let that put you off. It's much more graphic than other YA titles but I would have let my daughter read it at 12. (i'm permissive when it comes to books, so be forewarned.) to say that it's almost as good as "Mockingbird" is not hyperbole. If you "love" books, "Jasper Jones" is not to be missed!

Shostakovich's tortured relationship to the Soviet authorities was a main subject of Testimony, a book published after the composer's death by Volkov, who claimed that it contained Shostakovich's own remembrances. Controversy about the authenticity of Testimony swirled for years, until the publication in 1999 of Laurel E. Fay's Shostakovich: A Life, accepted by many scholars as decisively countering Testimony's claims to accuracy. The appearance of a new study by Volkov on Shostakovich (1906-1973), then, is sure to raise critical hackles. Volkov argues that Shostakovich survived the denunciation of his 1934 opera Lady Macbeth of Mtensk, and more minor controversies thereafter, in part by relying on a Russian tradition of playing the "holy fool" when under political pressure. When Stalin asked that Shostakovich henceforth submit operas and ballets for approval, the composer solved the problem by refraining from writing these musical forms. Volkov finds that luck played a role as well in Shostakovich surviving while so many other artists were killed or banned, but the "holy fool" argument as a whole only partially convinces: at times, Shostakovich's reticence regarding the regime seemed to turn into compliance, as when he signed a letter late in his life that denounced human rights activist Andrei Sakharov, an act Volkov says Shostakovich regretted. The book assumes a lot of knowledge of Soviet history for a general readership; nonspecialists interested in the composer and his work will still be better served by Fay.

After hearing Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, an envious Boris Pasternak wrote, "He went and said everything, and no one did anything to him for it." The extent of the composer's complicity or dissidence under Stalin has been much debated. Volkov, a prominent adherent of the latter view, marvels at this timid man's ability to express suffering in music that was nonetheless outwardly optimistic, and suggests that Shostakovich found an important model in Pushkin, who survived the cruelties of Tsar Nicholas I by juggling three classically Russian roles—"pretender,"�" chronicler," and "holy fool." Volkov's story depends too often on hunches and assumptions, but he is illuminating when he places the composer in the context of other artists (Pasternak, Bulgakov, and Mandelstam) who attempted dialogue with Stalin and were alternately supported and persecuted by him.

During his era of fear and yearning for freedom, Soviet cultural figures, taking the writer Pushkin as a model, resorted to subterfuge and double entendre to express their true beliefs. Volkov, coauthor of Shostakovich's memoirs, speaks from firsthand knowledge of the composer vis-a-vis Stalin, and he compares Shostakovich to the poet Pimen in Pushkin's play Boris Godunov, who embodied the holy fool, the pretender, and the chronicler. With the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtensk, Shostakovich ran afoul of Stalin. Thereafter, to express his covert rebellion, he quoted extensively from Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, and others who composed, as he often did, with death in mind. Volkov includes material about all the noted writers, artists, and composers of Shostakovich's era to describe the repressive environment and how it shaped Soviet culture, thereby offering invaluable insight into the subversive life of the intelligentsia of the time. Portrait of an artist under socialism

This book is a very interesting way of looking at the history of the relationship between authority and artistic freedom in Russia, both in the pre- and post-revolutionary period. The book emphasizes a sense of continuity of how the artist survived the pressures of the state. Shostakovich was arguably one of the two leading composes of the Soviet era, the other being Prokofiev. Shostakovich's talent was on a collision course with Stalin's intellectual pretense to understand what was best for Russian culture. There almost seems to be a sense of frustration on the part of the dictator who by playing the role of chief taste-maker reduced Russian culture in the Soviet period to one long banality. Volkov believes that Shostakovich managed to survive by playing the role of the holy fool. While this is an interesting thesis, there are inconsistencies. What one can infer from this book is that Shostakovich was very much a creature given to bursts of irrationality. This fits with some of his behavior where he tended to test the limits of what he could get away with in his relations with the regime. In a way he resembles Mozart as portrayed in the play and movie Amadaeus, somewhat infantile in his approach to life. Volkov does not appear that comfortable with exploring this idea and I think that this undermines the overall effectiveness of the work, making it merely good, and not necessarily excellent. This is not to say that the book does not have very strong merit. Volkov is very strong with putting the conflict between Shostakovich and Stalin into the larger historical conflict. He also provides a good sense of the era in which Shostakovich functioned as well as really good insight into Shostakovich's compositions. This is a worthwhile book for anyone interested in learning more about cultural life in the Soviet period.

This is a thoroughly engrossing tale of life as a writer, composer, director, etc under Stalin. Shostakovich is the focal point but the information about him is put into the context of the overall situation of the artist in USSR under Stalin. I have completed this book and have started Wilson's biography of Shostakovich.

Complex, Thrilling and Personal

Solomon Volkov's "Shostakovich and Stalin" is a complex and thrilling work that takes the reader inside the intricacies of Dmitri Shostakovich's psyche as well as Joseph Stalin's rigid regime. The reader is given a perspective of Russian music within the overarching theme of politics and history. It is an elaborate work - a slalom course of topics - reflecting a complex political environment as well as the involved role of music. It does not make for light reading, but it is incredibly illuminating. It puts music - as it always should be - in its proper social, political and historical context. It reminds the reader - in a blunt and forceful manner analogous to the brutal nature of Stalin's regime - that music exists as more than notes on a page or sounds from an instrument. In Shostakovich and Stalin, Volkov reminds us that the true meaning of music is only revealed when we understand the environment where it was created.

Throughout the book, Volkov's admiration for Shostakovich is evident. He writes glowingly of Shostakovich's music and seemingly admires him for absorbing Stalin's constant abuse. Volkov's disdain for Stalin and his regime is clear. He mentions Stalin's cruel treatment of many of Shostakovich's contemporaries as well as his manipulation of Shostakovich. Volkov highlights Stalin's "dabbling" in the arts as megalomaniacal and treats it as a condemnation of his entire regime. Through it all, Shostakovich is clearly affected - yet he survives. Because of his own experience as a musician in Communist Russia, Volkov is, at once, in awe of Shostakovich and deeply moved. He uses Shostakovich's life as the "agricultural base" to delve more deeply into the persona of the great composer. Thus, the labyrinth-like portrayal of his life is enriched and fuliflled by this technique. Despite this being a historical and musical work, the author's emotions often bubble to the surface. As a result, the book's effect on the reader is enhanced. This personal nature of the work makes it especially unique.

Much of "Shostakovich and Stalin" focuses on the clash of artistic philosophy between the two men. Unsurprisingly (as is the case with many authoritarian rulers), Stalin was a proponent of using music as propaganda to bolster his political strength. As a corollary to this, he was suspicious of artistic works lest they make a political statement questioning his authority. Shostakovich, as any great artist would, resented this and refused to fully submit to this existence. This formed the basis of tension and conflict between the two men. Of course, Shostakovich had to balance his fundamental artistic beliefs with self-preservation. That is, to completely fly in the face of Stalin's orders would result in personal tragedy - as was the case for far too many Russian artists under Stalin's rule. So it is within this context that the basis of their tortured relationship. Stalin, the megalomaniac that he was, was in control and sought to manipulate the composer. Shostakovich, with all his considerable courage and integrity (that Volkov describes so elegantly), did all he could to resist this manipulation. Yet it was impossible. This primary relationship in the book is simply gripping. It plays out better than any fiction - the reality of it both compelling and tragic for the reader. Thus, the very basis of this book - as stated in the title - fascinates and spellbounds the reader throughout.

Very engaging and well-written!!

Very informative and well-written book. As an educator, I would highly recommend this book to other educators to use as quality reading material for high school students and above. The Microsoft Trial chapter was especially well-written. Dr. Becraft breaks down complex legal terms in a way that students can understand and he provides a historical context for the court cases. Very engaging reading for both high school students and adults alike.

It surprises me that the Charity will end when Bill and Melinda go, According to Bill Microsoft will be gone or not that important any more. His treatment by the government is similar to what Rockerfellow went through. So history just repeats itself and are just a bug.

Dr. Sadoon Morad is the ADOC Chaired Professor at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Morad has given courses and performed consultant work and research collaboration with numerous oil companies around the world. His previous achievements include the development of conceptual models to predict the impact of diagenetic alterations on distribution of reservoir quality within sequence stratigraphy. He has published about 70 papers in international journals, currently serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Sedimentary Research and has edited three Special Publications in total.
