One of the best Spiritual autobiography by my Gurudev Shri Shivkrupanand Swami
By Yogi
One of the best Spiritual autobiography by my Gurudev Shri Shivkrupanand Swami. This book will take you in a complete different dimension of the Himalayas which is unknown to the people and world. In this book, Swamiji describes His spiritual journey as a child which led Him to the Himalayas and how He met his Guru - Dadagurudev Shiv Baba and other ageless yogis in the deep Himalayas. A recommended book for all the spiritual aspirants.

By the way, you can also order this book in hardcover, available in three different languages - Hindi, Gujarati & English (visit -- http://www.bspmpl.com/). There are total five parts of 'Samarpan Yog of the Himalayas.' This is 2nd part, I recommend to read all the 5 parts of this autobiography.

Review
“I like the Friedenberg and Silverman Cognitive Science because I've found it to be a more inviting entree to this complex interdisciplinary field than other texts I've previously used. The authors really do a fine job distilling the essential questions from each discipline that contributes to cognitive science for novice students. End-of-chapter reviews are thought-provoking. I'm eagerly awaiting the second addition, with its excellent additional chapters on social and emotional cognition. I think it will improve an already great teaching resource!” (Kathleen M. Galotti 2011-04-08)

"The strength of this book is the systematic introduction of the disciplines, methods, and viewpoints that constitute cognitive science. Other books are not as systematic and comprehensive on the overall endeavor of cognitive science. They do not as systematically evaluate different viewpoints as this book does." (Marc Pomplun)

"I like the inclusion of the new chapters on emotional cognition and social cognition. The most impressive aspect of this book to students is its ability to make a large amount of complex material accessible to students." (Emanual Mason)

DO NOT USE THIS TEXTBOOK
By Max Martin
What a horrible book. If you are a professor looking for a textbook for an interdisciplinary cognitive science class, absolutely DO NOT use this one. If you want to learn anything about the subject, DO NOT buy it. This horrible excuse for a textbook was written by a couple of psychologists who obviously don't know the first thing about philosophy, AI, computer science, or any of the other topics they attempt to address. An inordinately large amount of text is devoted to a complete history of psychology, while philosophical issues crucial to the field are given the short shrift.

Not only is the material in the book of reprehensible quality, it is presented in an embarrassingly slipshod manner. I can't imagine how a publisher could print this book and still respect themselves. The illustrations from the book consist of clip art and worse, and consistently look pixelly and distorted. As if it weren't bad enough that the material is second-rate, it's cheaply presented with useless and confusing diagrams and tables.

All in all, my undergraduate class could have put together a better text. Throughout the course we were consistently correcting and refuting the text. Our professor only ordered it for the class because he had not read it. This book is a waste of time, money, trees, effort, and space. Avoid it at all costs.

Excuse my language, but this book sucks
By edit name
I totally agree with the previous negative review, so I'll just add my own disappointments here. I am currently taking a cognitive science course, and this is the textbook we're using. It's new this year, and I have a hunch it won't be on the menu for next semester.

It seems like at least a third of the text in this book is dedicated to sentences like this: "We have just now read [topic A], which was [description of topic A], and next we will cover topic B, and after that we'll cover topic C." This fluff/dust makes the book hard to read, and there is very little "meat" in between.

Here's an actual quote that made me laugh out loud this morning: (page 167)

"Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT). This technique was first developed in the 1970s. [short explanation of what it is, then new paragraph: ] Positron Emission Tomography (PET). This imaging proceedure (developed in the 1980s) was developed later than computerized axial tomography." Well, how about that, they even attempt to teach me about time: the 1980s came after the 1970s!!

Don't buy this book.

Great introductory book for an extremely interdisciplinary field
By L. Kelly
For the amount of material it covers, this is a great book. I read it cover to cover and I've kept even after finishing my intro to Cognitive Science course because it is straightforward and covers all of the basics of modern cognitive science. There is much more breadth to it than Thagard's book Mind: Introduction to Cognitive Science, and Gazzaniga's Methods in Mind (although those are great books, they're more specific and more suited for upper level classes or as a supplement ot this book). I don't think the one star reviews are valid assessments; my major is Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology (it's a single interdisciplinary major at my school)and coming from a program with a heavier emphasis on philosophy than most cognitive science and psychology majors, I think it's unfair to demand that an introductory book like this delve too deeply into that aspect of the material. This gives a cursory explanation of the philosophical debates going on, but ultimately there's way too much going on in philosophy of the mind to be adequately introduced in a book that's also supposed to be giving an overview of cognitive psychology and neuroscience. To be fair, the text can get repetitive because the structure is the same througout the book, but that didn't keep me from reading it when I was taking the class. As a plus, the publisher's website offers some flashcards and review questions for each chapter which really helped me study for exams. If I were a cognitive science professor I'd use this for my intro class over Thagard's or Gazzaniga's.

"Better fisherman do not hope for success or rely on luck in order to catch fish. They put their hopes in facts, skills, knowledge, and experience. The more of these qualities we have, the more fish we catch and the more consistent we become. Likewise, the more we know and the more we experience with Jesus, the better we will be at becoming the kind of person we want to be and God wants us to be." Anyone who loves the peacefulness, the patience, and the skill involved in fishing would probably agree that many of the characteristics that can make a great fisherman also make a person great.

Very similar to the golf-themed Go for the Green, this fishing-themed devotional, Catch of the Day, features a Daily Scripture, a Daily Fishing Tip: "Pork trailers on jigs and spinnerbaits work better than soft plastics in cold water," and a brief devotional thought that applies insights from the art of fishing to daily spiritual growth.

This is great considering he normally doesn't like to read. The message and the delivery of the message are wonderful! I'll be buying several copies to give as gifts.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."––Proverbs 22:6 KJV

Your child is worth all the time, money, heartaches, and effort.

C. H. Spurgeon shows how to:
* Impact the world one child at a time––your child can make a difference!
* Train your children to make good choices.
* Discipline with God's loving hand.
* Love them when you hate their behavior.
* Teach them to be givers, not takers.
* Build a compassionate heart in them.
* Help them discover their new best friend, Jesus.
* Encourage their leadership and ministry skills.
* Build strong, healthy, happy families.

From the depths of his God–given wisdom, Spurgeon offers encouragement and advice to parents and teachers on guiding the spiritual development of children from infancy through young adulthood.

About the Author
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892), the "Prince of Preachers," preached his first sermon at age sixteen and became a pastor at age eighteen. Spurgeon drew large crowds and built the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London in 1861 to accommodate them. He published over two thousand sermons; his inspiring and challenging messages comprise the largest collection of work by a single author. Spurgeon preached to an estimated ten million people during his lifetime, including notables such as the prime minister of England, members of the royal family, and Florence Nightingale. He appealed constantly to his hearers to move on in the Christian faith, to allow the Lord to minister to them individually, and to be used of God to win the lost to Christ. In addition to his powerful preaching, Spurgeon founded and supported charitable outreaches, including educational institutions. His pastors' college, which is still in existence today, taught nearly nine hundred students in Spurgeon's time. He also founded the famous Stockwell Orphanage.

Great thoughts. Bad overview.
By Steven L. Nelson
If you're looking for a great overview of parenting, this is not it. It is clearly made up of bits and pieces of various sermons, and fails to address several of the Scriptures most directly given to parents, namely those given in Proverbs. It also seems to be targeted at Sunday school teachers rather than parents.

If you're looking for a lot of good thoughts on parenting, teaching, and children, this book is incredible. I've never underlined so many thought provoking passages. It is particularly strong on the value of teaching children. It's a great source of quotes.

Regardless of the lack of biblical coverage, and unsystematic coverage of the topic, I'd still recommend it. If you already have a couple of books that cover the topic of parenting, this would be a worthwhile supplemental read.

Excellent Advice on Raising Spiritually Strong Children
By Michael Taylor
Though written over 100 years ago, this book applies to anyone who today is interested in raising and investing time in children. As the father of 4 wonderful children, I was blessed by this book.

Among the important points covered are:

1. The importance of discipling children so they may have many years of Christian service.

2. Anything we do to keep children from Jesus greatly displeases Him.

3. Children will readily gather around a kindly-hearted person.

4. How dare adults who trifle with God's Word despise a child's playing and pursuits!

5. The work we do for children belongs to Jesus, not us.

6. Teach the Scriptures instead of human opinion to children.

7. Teaching children is serious work. Remember, we are working for God, not ourselves.

8. A person saved at an early age has less to unlearn.

While the book is more of an exhortation instead of suggesting methods, you will be challenged to realize the seriousness of raising children in a godly way.

Read, be challenged, and enjoy.

Highly recommended!

MUST READ FOR CHRISTIAN PARENTS
By Raising Godly Children
Charles Spurgeon knew a thing or two about parenting. He twin boys reflected his legacy of Christian service and (like Charles) had an indelible impact on England. This is a practical, easy to read book from Spurgeon. This book is easier to read than most of Spurgeon materials. It's broken up into 23 small chapters (between 2-5 pages). Great book to use as a devotional.

A book for finding your way back.
By A Customer
P.L. Travers is an inspiration. She knows what is in a story and she shares it with us in this marvelous book. Each new essay or story reveals a wealth and insight that changes the colour of your world view. It is a book to set you back on your path and a book that can be dipped in and out of, read and re-read always giving something for you to take away. P.L. Travers does for grown ups in this book what Mary Poppins did for everyone.

Insight and Inspiration
By merrystar
P.L. Travers, while best known for "Mary Poppins", was also a scholar of myth. This slender volume contains a fair fraction of her work, mostly written for the magazine "Parabola" over the course of many years. Each essay studies a common theme or element of traditional stories.
Travers has the ability to combine an absolutely astounding amount of information on myths and folktales from all over the world into insightful and fascinating text. Throughout weaves the story of her own life, told in snatches, reminding the reader again and again how story reflects aspects of our own lives. "Only Connect", the phrase borrowed from E.M. Forster by Travers, sums up the underlying purpose which motivates every essay.
This book continually draws me back for the wisdom and inspiration it offers. I love it because it makes me stop and think.

Amazing...
By Stuart Dole
We read children's stories to each other at bedtime - at least sometimes. We went through the "Mary Poppins" series, and I noticed there was an adult undercurrent, a flavor of the mystical, lurking in the stories. So I sought out what else Travers had written, and came across this. Wow!
Turns out Travers edited the philosophical magazine "Parabola" for many years, and this book is a collection of her contributions and editorials. There is tremendous depth here, as well as great writing. Each chapter is fortunately short - they are so rich it's like a box of chocolate truffles - eat one and it's heaven - eat more and it's too much. "Fear not the heat of the sun..."

African Adventure With A Templar Title
By Fred Rayworth
This story was really an African adventure with Doc and the gang and had little to do with the Templars. In a way, I was glad as I bought this story along with a Templar book from a different author and that one made me kind of sick of the whole thing!

In this story, the premise is searching for King Solomon's Mines after some Viking chased after it before a Templar went after it, or something like that. Anyway, Doc's cousin and her husband drag Doc to Africa and the story completely shifts into them becoming embroiled in the attempted takeover of a central African country. The action swings to the bad guys and the other bad guys and once in a while gets back to Doc and the gang, then shifts back to the bad guys again. What about the Templar thing? We hardly ever hear about it until almost the end, except for a brief mention here and there as they try to unravel bits and pieces of the mystery.

The one thing this book did for me is convince me I never ever want to go to central Africa. Mr. Christopher paints such a dreary picture of life there that my worst nightmares could not come close to how bad things are, especially in the Sudan and that region. At times the story was more like horror than a thriller.

I guess he is going to keep the Templar titles but just as a premise because if this trend keeps up, the stories won't have much to do with actual Templars. I really don't mind that at all.

I must also mention that Doc's nemeses, Blackwater only makes a brief appearance in this story. Maybe we'll see more of them in the next one.

The writing is still top-notch and the story flows well. My only beef is that I just didn't like the setting. It didn't draw me in that much. I would have liked Mr. Christopher to concentrate more on Doc and less on all the side characters. I understand why he did it this time, and the big reveal in the end wasn't bad at all, but overall, I liked his previous stories better, especially when he had Blackwater on his heels. In the next one, they (Blackwater) don't necessarily have to be the bad guys but Doc needs someone hot on his heels. On this outing, Docs main nemeses was the whole country rather than any particular bad guy.

Still, not a bad read. Waiting for the next one. Recommended.

an OK summer read
By palestrina7
I read the new Legion book this week, and the good news is that it is exactly what you would expect from Paul Christopher, a fast-moving, sprawling, historical romp. The bad news is that it is exactly what you would expect from Christopher. The one thing he does well is come up with wonderful conceits around which to spin his tales. In this case a wild and satisfying notion that there are Vikings - a whole culture - hidden in the African Jungle. Mix in a little King Solomon's mine and you have got the makings of a great yarn. But then that's where it doesn't quite come together for me.

There are a couple of things the author doesn't do well:
1) He doesn't make me CARE about the heroes. I guess I am supposed to care because they are the good guys, but the character development just always fall short. It's a bad sign when I don't care whether the hero(s)gets killed or not.
2) He doesn't yet know how to create a climactic dramatic line. There is no real climax of the action/retribution/vengeance. He sets up a great battle and then dispatches the whole conflict in a page or two, in a somewhat dispassionate style. I can put the book down at literally any point, because it does not really ever create any frantic, white-knuckle page-turning.

Overall, not a bad summer read, but no adrenaline rush.

The Cement Garden (Modern Plays), by Ian McEwan

"I did not kill my father, but sometimes I felt I had helped him on his way. And but for the fact that it coincided with a landmark in my own physical growth, his death seemed insignificant compared with what followed. I am only including the little story of his death to explain how my sisters and I came to have such a large quantity of cement at our disposal."

In the relentless summer heat, four children retreat into an isolated world left to them by their parents and attempt to create their own version of a family. Ian McEwan's first novel, The Cement Garden, written in 1978, explores coming-of-age, burgeoning sexuality and the distortions of a fourteen-year-old mind.

David Aula and Jimmy Osborne's stage adaptation approaches the horror of the story through the innocent eyes of children, and encourages an audience to remember the games, irreverence, and shadows of their youth: to remember and reinvent their sense of invincibility.

The Cement Garden received its world premiere as part of Vault Festival Waterloo, on 28 January 2014.

What is "Normal?" What is "Natural"?
By Paul Frandano
Ian McEwan freezes our attention on the grotesque, then renders grotesquerie plausible, even "normal." Indeed, what is "natural" assumes an expanded range of possibility in McEwan's writing, adding fresh dimension to psychological horror. The Cement Garden, his first novel (and better described as a novella), brings these observations graphically to life, in precise, crystalline prose.

The Cement Garden has been likened to Golding's Lord of the Flies for its careful evocation of a society of young people, suddenly relieved of adult oversight, that evolves rapidly, opportunistically, organically in response to specific challenges posed by an unusual environment. In McEwan's working of these materials, related in the flat, dispassionate voice of Jack, the 14-year-old narrator, the challenging environment is the solitary house in which Jack, his brother, and two sisters live, set in the midst of a desolate urban landscape cleared for a freeway that never gets built.

The book takes its name from the paved-over garden Jack's fussy, acerbic father, a heart patient, envisions as tidier as easier to maintain. The exertions of the project kill the father, to no one's apparent regret, in the first chapter, leaving a sizable inventory of cement behind. With the demise of their long ailing mother shortly thereafter, the orphaned children are forced to recreate the family unit. Fearful of the split-up of the family, foster care for little Tom, and other worrisome ministrations of an impersonal state, the children decide to tell no one of their mother's death and to entomb her in concrete in the basement.

Jack recounts these and other details, and the changes each child undergoes, in his matter-of-fact voice. McEwan charges his tale with an extraordinary measure of sexual tension, primarily between Jack - much more than the stereotypically acne-covered, pubescent, serially self-abusing "sullen teen" - and his beautiful, athletic older sister Julia, who assumes the maternal role of "Wendy" to the family's "lost children." The movement of the story is aided and abetted by Derek, Julia's "bloke," a professional snooker player, aking all the questions the nosey private eye in a Hitchcock picture usually asks. The dreaded resolution of the relentlessly rising tension, carefully withheld until the closing pages, relieves narrative pressure but raises disturbing perspectives on love, the family, the "ties that bind."

The Cement Garden renews, at least in my mind, the great question of what it is that prompts a lavishly gifted writer to explore so sensitively the wholly bizarre. Great writing generally works simultaneously at several levels and admits layers of meaning. McEwan writes about familiar characters who before our eyes become something very, very different. He begs us to inquire beneath the surface familiarity into worlds unseen by, or denied to, passing spectators. He compels us to ask ourselves "what is `normal'?" "What is `natural'?" His answers may unsettle, but they are are the product of a novelistic logic that, in its internal workings, is eminently reasonable.

The Cement Garden is assuredly not for every taste. More than once, I looked up from the page with an "ugh." McEwan's imagination teems with clambering spiders. But as an early example of McEwan's art and his project to redefine, or reinvent, the psychological horror story, this book is a worthy, if unsettling, read.

It's a 1st-person, urban, erotic Lord of the Flies!
By jjwylie@intermind.net
"I did not kill my father," this slim novel begins, "but I sometimes felt I had helped him on his way." Soon the mother is dead as well, and four children are left to fend for themselves in a secluded house in a dying part of the city.
There's Julie, the eldest, a ripe & willful beauty who's almost a woman; there's Jack, the narrator, a boy bewildered by his growing body & appetites; there's Sue, bookish & ever-observant; and then there's Tom, the baby of the family, who actually seems to get younger, regressing as the days go by. These four form an uneasy family, slowly learning to be self-sufficient in this strangely apocalyptic setting.
But an intruder in the form of Julie's new boyfriend threatens their fragile stasis by asking too many questions. How long have the four of them been alone? And just what is buried under the crumbling pile of cement in the basement?
This book has been mistakenly marketed as a horror novel; it's horrific, sure, but not as horrible as the pulp that defines the genre. What makes it particularly good is its characters, the children who are both recognizably sympathetic and exotically extraordinary.
Ian McEwan has created a taut & provocative thriller written in pitch-perfect and stripped-down prose. Beyond being a macabre morality tale, The Cement Garden is a psychological-suspense yarn, a perceptive portrayal of adolescence that will keep you riveted up to the final, climactic scene in an upstairs bedroom.

We are family-
By A Customer
Incest is the latest trendy topic- be it in book, movie, fiction, memoir- and it would be easy to brush it off as mere titillation. At first, "The Cement Garden" seems to be the epitome of this sort of gratuitously shocking genre, as it painstakingly gets inside the head of a young man and his secret desires. Upon closer examination, "The Cement Garden" reveals itself to be a far more ominous book. His desire for his sister becomes indicative of his need to grab an anchor in a world that has left him behind. As these four children struggle to make a family, the sexual energy that emerges becomes a better form of family love than that which they've known before. Though the children are English, they are the British equivalent of the kind of people we so quickly and easily make fun of- the natural target of a certain type of elitist humor. Rather than mocking these children for their transgression, the book's success comes when we ultimately understand the ways and the whys of why they do what they do. Therein lies the power, and the horror of the bleak landscape of the novel- it's the only love they'll maybe ever know. Having said that the book is an artistic achievement, I also want to add that when I finished it I couldn't be sure that I was glad I took that particular journey. I was utterly enthralled with the story and its raw honesty, but so depressed when it was over, as the world of the book was so hermetic and insular that there was no way out- necessary to the book but brutal on the reader. As an aside, the film adaptation is highly worth checking out as a most faithful visual translation, mostly as a result of the bizarrely appropriate casting. The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of French pop star Serge Gainsbourg and Chelsea girl Jane Birkin. (Serge and Charlotte appeared in bed together in a print ad in the early 80s.) Furthermore, the film is directed by Jane's brother and hence Charlotte's uncle Andrew Birkin, and the younger children are played by the director's own children- Charlotte's cousins.
