Tea in China explores the contours of religious and cultural transformation in traditional China from the point of view of an everyday commodity and popular beverage. The work traces the development of tea drinking from its mythical origins to the nineteenth century and examines the changes in aesthetics, ritual, science, health, and knowledge that tea brought with it.

The shift in drinking habits that occurred in late medieval China cannot be understood without an appreciation of the fact that Buddhist monks were responsible for not only changing people's attitudes toward the intoxicating substance, but also the proliferation of tea drinking. Monks had enjoyed a long association with tea in South China, but it was not until Lu Yu's compilation of the Chajing (The Classic of Tea) and the spread of tea drinking by itinerant Chan monastics that tea culture became popular throughout the empire and beyond.

Tea was important for maintaining long periods of meditation; it also provided inspiration for poets and profoundly affected the ways in which ideas were exchanged. Prior to the eighth century, the aristocratic drinking party had excluded monks from participating in elite culture. Over cups of tea, however, monks and literati could meet on equal footing and share in the same aesthetic values. Monks and scholars thus found common ground in the popular stimulant―one with few side effects that was easily obtainable and provided inspiration and energy for composing poetry and meditating. In addition, rituals associated with tea drinking were developed in Chan monasteries, aiding in the transformation of China's sacred landscape at the popular and elite level. Pilgrimages to monasteries that grew their own tea were essential in the spread of tea culture, and some monasteries owned vast tea plantations. By the end of the ninth century, tea was a vital component in the Chinese economy and in everyday life.

Tea in China transcends the boundaries of religious studies and cultural history as it draws on a broad range of materials―poetry, histories, liturgical texts, monastic regulations―many translated or analyzed for the first time. The book will be of interest to scholars of East Asia and all those concerned with the religious dimensions of commodity culture in the premodern world.

A brillant and refreshingly well researched book

James Benn has written a scholarly masterpiece which has earned a prominent place of honour among my exhaustive collection of tea books. Dispensing with the usual (and quite sad) tendency to repeat the tired myths about tea as if they were absolute truths, he has dug down deep into the sources and refreshingly returned with clarity and eruditness to not only dispel the false, but more so, to paint a new picture of the evolution of tea and tea culture in China. This is a very valuable book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Tea in Old China

I can only agree 100% with Matthew London's review (the only other one so far). This is a major work. It covers tea in China from the beginning through the Ming Dynasty; it is best on Tang and Song. It draws on a vast range of Chinese sources, almost none of them previously mined in any detail by western writers. It does indeed, as London says, avoid the tired myths; it breaks new ground and provides us new translations throughout. Benn shows that tea was closely associated with Buddhism from the beginning through Song. He provides details on differing ways of brewing the stuff over the centuries. He has some fun with the incredible lengths of tea connoisseurship, which resemble wine snobbery today. For anyone interested in tea, or in the history of Chinese consumption, this is an indispensable book.

Die verschiedenen Ans�tze der Dependenztheorie versuchten fast alle in einer sozio�konomischen Gesamtinterpretation die Entwicklungsproblematik Lateinamerikas als Problem der Abh�ngigkeit von den industrialisierten L�ndern auf zu deuten, die Rahmenbedingungen der Entwicklung in ein theoretisches Konzept einzuordnen und Erkl�rungsmuster f�r diese Rahmenbedingungen zu finden. Die in der Nachfolge der Imperialismustheorie stehende Dependenztheorie erkl�rt die Entwicklung der lateinamerikanischen L�nder als „Entwicklung zur Unterentwicklung“, die durch exogene Faktoren veranla�t wird. In dieser Einleitung mag es gen�gen die Hauptaussage der Dependenztheorie so darzustellen: Die kapitalistischen L�nder des Nordens sichern ihre eigenen Aufstieg und ihre wirtschaftliche Potenz durch die Ausbeutung der L�nder der sogenannten Dritten Welt. Diese L�nder sind assymetrisch in die Weltwirtschaft integriert und haben in dieser Konstellation keine M�glichkeit, sich der Ausbeutung selbst zu entziehen. Die industrialisierten L�nder haben wiederum kein Interesse daran, die Situation zu �ndern, da sie selbst von der Ausbeutung profitieren. L�sungen, die innerhalb der Dependenztheorie angeboten werden, variieren je nach Richtung zwischen der Schaffung eines lateinamerikanischen Wirtschaftsmarktes bis hin zu radikalen Umst�rzung der Welt(wirtschafts)ordnung, um den Kapitalismus zu vernichten. Obwohl die Dependenztheorie seit ihrer wissenschaftlichen Glanzphase in den 70er Jahren heutzutage eher an Bedeutung verloren hat, soll in dieser Arbeit die Dependenztheorie als eine m�gliche Theorie der Modernisierung von L�ndern betrachtet, ihre Besonderheiten aufgezeigt und als theoretische Konzeption kritisiert werden. "Blending financial sophistication with bone-crunching violence, the Russian mob has become the FBI's most formidable criminal adversary, creating an international criminal colossus that has surpassed the Colombian cartels, the Japanese Yakuzas, the Chinese triads, and the Italian Mafia in wealth and weaponry," writes Friedman. True story of Russian Mafia

Robert Friedman the author Of "Red Mafiya" reveals who the Russian Mafia are , and how they operate. This is true story of how Russian Mafia has invaded America.Russian Mafia must be stopped just like any other ethnic mafia. Russian Mafia is mostly Jewish, but they betray even Israel for money. The Russian Mafia only works for itself, and no country. They have no loyalty to Russia, USA, or Israel, but only for their mafia organization.Russia , USA, and Israel have been victims of their crimes. Now is the time for all three countries to work together to limit the Russian Mafia.

Extremely frustrating!

The demise, dissolution, breakup, choose your own word, of The Former Soviet Union is about as dramatic a Historical Event as one is likely to witness. It is not a simple topic, what has happened, and what will continue to evolve will fill hundreds of books well into the future. Attempting an overview of what is presented, as the largest illegal transfer of wealth on record cannot be done in 288 pages even if the pages are microfilm! Every time this book began to focus on a specific event, it would jump to the next.
There is more information in this 288-page book than anyone can possibly digest. Trying to keep track of the organizational structure of the "Mafiyas", and their relationships to each other, would take a Cray Supercomputer. The Author also touches on Historical events of huge import, theories on what may result from them, and they too are quickly abandoned, before any real exposition has been offered.
There is a theory that the wealth that has been removed from Russia/The Former Soviet Union could have similar effects politically as The Versailles Treaty of WW I had on Germany. It's an interesting idea, may warrant a book, but not the shallow mention it receives here. There are at least a dozen similar theories that are intriguing in the extreme. These cannot be treated like bulleted points in a memo.
This is a highlight book of illegal activity that spans from Meyer Lansky to the present. One of the problems is names like Genovese, Gambino, and Gotti, are familiar to readers of the genre. This book mentioned hundreds of organizations, and half the Countries on the Planet! You are rushed through diamond mines in Sierra Leone, Switzerland, Germany, Israel, Cuba, Azerbaijan, Turkey Brighton Beach Restaurants, half of South America, virtually all of North America, and nearly every state in the U.S. And there are the 14 time zones of Russia and the Prison System of The Gulags across Siberia.
The Author clearly knows his subject. I would hope he would take the time, slow down, and concentrate on depth rather than breadth.

About the Author
Mary Knight has lived in many wondrous places -- Traverse City, Michigan, and Whidbey Island, Washington, among them. She and her husband now reside in Lexington, Kentucky, where she enjoys living in the rolling green hills of horse country, exploring the Appalachian Mountains to the east, and watching University of Kentucky basketball. Most of all, she cherishes time with friends and family, who add great wonder to her life. Saving Wonder is her debut novel.

A delightful labyrinth

In her debut novel, Mary Knight proves an ability to see, then curate these observations about the experience of youth, family and community relationships and political issues that, like it or not, affect all of us. She masterfully weaves these observations into a novel that transcends the YA category. Her storytelling voice is convincing and authentic, and she peppers the prose with a unique approach that has been seen nowhere else -- by this reviewer, in any case.

Knight is tuned in to Kentuckians' sense of place and, therefore, sense of self. This includes world-class natural wonders and cultural touchstones such as the Kentucky Derby and University of Kentucky men's basketball. The reader should not mistake Knight's familiarity with the area with regional writing, however. The themes explored in this book -- person against nature, person against self, conflict with oneself -- transcend state and national boundaries.

This novel is a "wonder" that will be "saved" forever on this reviewer's bookshelf and on the bookshelves of others. It makes a fantastic gift.

The first book was just okay, but this one ...

The first book was just okay, but this one lacks coherency and narrative logic. There's also something off about the tone. None of the characters felt genuine. I admit I gave up about halfway through, but I was getting really frustrated by the endless pointless snippy dialogue and frankly, there was nobody likable. Everybody was petty and kind of mean.

Kippy Strikes Again!

Kathleen Hale is so fricking funny my guts still hurt from this book. Kippy is one of my favorite protagonists in years--her brand of crazy is so unique you can't help but get wrapped up in it.

Don't want to spoiler anything, so I'll just say that if, like me, you loved the first book, you'll absolutely want to pick this up.

I've met Laurie Hartman at F.I.C.O.,Flanders International College of Osteopathy,were he tought his techniques.He is so brilliant that he remaines the modest man himself.His manipulations as he does it are so easy and we ,the students , are wresteling with it.I've learned to follow the tissues and not the technique as we learned them. Bad for learning, good for reference. Broad in scope, at the expense of being unnecessarily concise.

I've taught myself many subjects from multiple textbooks so I have a pretty good intuition for what constitutes clear explanations. If you've already taken a Multivariable Calculus class before and are just looking for a good reference book: maybe you can save space on your bookshelf by using this as a comprehensive reference text for all things calculus.

Otherwise, this is a terrible textbook to learn Calculus from. The explanations of concepts are unnecessarily obtuse and formal. This is not a textbook intended to make learning easy or clear. It is a reference text for someone who already understands the subject. Whenever I struggled with a topic from this book, I would have to open my Calculus textbook by Larson & Edwards for better explanations.

If you have a choice: skip this book and buy a used copy of ISBN-13: 978-0547167022 for ~$24.

Not clear all the time

The first problem I noticed with this book was that there were typographical errors. I found two in the first chapter alone, and one of them was a misspelling of "Archaea". In a textbook, there definitely shouldn't be mistakes in the spelling of words related the the subject matter. In addition, I've seen mistakes in the concept problems at the end of some of the chapter.

I found most of the diagrams to be clear, but my professor often supplemented them by bringing in examples from other books that he claimed were better. Sometimes diagrams referenced in the text would be on the following page, so I would be flipping pages back and forth to look at the diagrams and the text.

The biggest upside to this book was the price. I paid just over $50 to buy it new and it came with access to online resources. At the time I am writing this review, the price for a new copy on Amazon is more than $110. I would not recommend buying this if it isn't required for a class. I think there are many other genetics textbooks out there that are better that you could get for a similar price.

It is easy to read and the photos are helpful in explaining the material. Highly recommend this version. My course required a more updated version, but this one suited my needs just fine.
