The definitive book on Amblypygids

This is the definitive work on the Whipspiders (Amblypygids). It has information that interested people can use from beginner to expert. It is very easy to read and filled with useful culture advice that no other publication has. Orin is a life-long arthropod enthusiast and is moderator on several online insect and arachnid forums as well as the editor of Invertebrates Magazine. I have read and used Orin's books for years and each time I get one it changes the way I raise my animals and they respond by becoming healthier. These books also share experiences and habits that I haven't observed myself and gives me things to look for in my animals and to explore with students. The pictures, most in color, electron microscope images, and other graphics, in this book reinforce his points and make it easy to see the body part, structure, behavior or habit he is discussing. This book is a must have for anyone with an interest in these fascinating animals!

This is an excellent book on the care and husbandry of amblypygids. The book is full of very detailed identification characteristics, care and husbandry for the species discussed and breeding requirements. The book is very well illustrated with high quality illustrations and photos. I would recommend this book to any arachnid keeper or anyone with an interest in arachnids. The book is very well written and the information is conveyed accessible to many different skill levels. This is an essential reference text for anyone in the hobby.

This is an amazing book with more information than the average hobbyist could ever have asked for, particularly with regards to whipspider biology. About the Author
Larry Hodges, of Germantown, MD, is a member of the U.S. Table Tennis Hall of Fame as a coach and writer. He’s certified as a National Coach by USA Table Tennis, the highest level, and coaches at the Maryland Table Tennis Center. As a writer he has nine books and over 1500 published articles in over 140 publications. He’s also an active member of Science Fiction Writers of America, with over 70 short story sales and the novel “Sorcerers in Space,” a humorous fantasy about the U.S.-Soviet space race in the 1960s, with sorcerers instead of astronauts. Many of his best stories are compiled in the anthology “Pings and Pongs.” His story “The Awakening” was the unanimous grand prize winner at the 2010 Garden State Horror Writers Short Story Competition. His story “Rationalized” won the November 2011 Story Quest Competition. Table tennis fantasy, history, and fiction all in one package

If you're a ponger, you know that an American doing well in the World Championships is about as rare a Loch Ness monster sighting. But hey, if you thought the U.S. hockey team could win the gold medal in 1980, if you thought Argentina could beat the U.S. in basketball in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and if you cried during the ending scene of "Rudy", then this book is for you.

You really do have to keep your fantasy hat on while reading the book. Set aside that Chinese National Team fanboi-ism for a little bit and you'll be guaranteed a nice literary experience. The story is basically what it says in the back cover, an American who goes to China to learn the Chinese secrets of table tennis.

Pros: I really liked the chapter with Ogimura. The physical preparation for table tennis really pumped me up to go out and do a few sprints and some push-ups. It was like a motivation CD that you listen to in your car before hitting the gym. Once you arrive, you're ready to get down to business. I also enjoyed reading the chapter with "The Dragon". It was really very funny for me. Again, keep your fantasy hat on. There was also a good bit of history in the book. I knew a little bit being a ponger but there were a few things that I had to search online for verification. The World Championship match was complete insanity. The development of the characters of Andy and Coach Wang were excellent in that a reader can identify with both of their motivations.

Cons: The chapter with Rong Guotuan was a bit dark. I was not put off by it as I enjoy those kinds things in other books also. I just did not think it fit in well with the overall feel of the book. I suppose it would be like putting bacon in an ice cream cone. Some might like it and some might not.

Overall, Larry did a great job mixing TT history, fantasy, and fiction in a 100-page package.

A fascinating story of an American wanting to be the best in the world of table tennis, going to China for some magical and intriguing training sessions, and how he eventually achieved his hard-earned success. The best part is in the journey of it - vivid, colorful descriptions of the matches, processes, psyches, and sometimes point-by-point analysis. This was a real page-turner, and was one of the best binges I've been on.

About the Author
Hermann Kopetz received his PhD in physics "sub auspiciis praesidentis" from the University of Vienna, Austria in 1968. After eight years in Industry he accepted in 1978 an appointment as a Professor for Computer Process Control at the Technical University of West-Berlin, moving to the Technical University of Vienna in 1992. Kopetz is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Science, Fellow of the IEEE, and is a member of the Information Society Advisory Group (ISTAG), advising the European Commission in Brussels in the domain of information technology since 2008. In June 2007 he received the honorary degree of Dr. honoris causa from the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France. Kopetz is the chief architect of the time-triggered technology for dependable embedded Systems and a co-founder of the company TTTech. The time-triggered technology is deployed in leading automotive and aerospace applications and has been selected by NASA for the Orion Spacecraft.

A useful book on time-triggered techniques

I found this book very useful. Despite the general title, Hermann Kopetz is mainly concerned with time-triggered techniques. This approach is becoming increasing popular with developers of real-time systems because it has been found to result in very predictable system behavior and, hence, can help to improve system reliability. This book was one of the first to be published in this area. It provides a considerable amount of useful information.

Outstanding for both practitioners and students

This book is exactly what I have been waiting for.

I started to work as a programmer for Boeing in 1985, went to grad school, worked at a research lab, then am in the academe. Along the way, I have gotten exposed to real-time computing in bits and pieces on a good number of projects. But none of them required me to get very deep into real-time computing, and I have never had a class in it. But I have been meaning to learn more, and in a systematic way, for some time.

So, from that context, it was with great anticipation that I learned of Prof. Kopetz's new edition (2ed). He is without question one of the top researchers in the area of fault-tolerant real-time computing, based on his long record of publishing in DSN and other top publication venues. He has worked with the auto industry literally for decades, and has recently branched out. So is is very applied and "down to earth". Ergo, my anticipation.

This book did not disappoint this applied practitioner, researcher, and instructor. It had the gamut of topics, with a focus on time-triggered technologies, ranging from global time, models, fault-tolerance, real-time communication, real-time operating systems, and scheduling. All concrete and "meaty" topics. There were also a number of topics that seem very important to architecting and engineering a real-time system, including simplicity (that one surprised me, but made a lot of sense in hindsight), system design, and validation. It also had good material on very timely applied research concerns: an entire chapter on the "Internet of Things" (IoT), and "cyber-physical systems" issues were spread throughout the book.

I strongly recommend this book for either practitioners who, like me, need or want to learn more about real-time systems (and more systematically than one could learn by a smattering of tutorial and research papers). I also would recommend it for a senior undergraduate or a graduate class. Indeed, I may use it for half of the material in a seminar class next school year, depending on how I decide what topics I really want to cover.

Excellent work

As a graduate student,I used this book for work on real time communication and time triggered architecture.I must say,the book is very well organised and easy to read. The concepts presented in this book are all practical and very helpful for real time system practioners. This book also helps students to gain overall understanding of the real time systems and ongoing research projects. I found the chapters on Real time model, real time communication and time triggered architecture very helpful for my research and the case studies on different time triggered architecture were very useful. If you are looking to dive into real time systems or taking a course on real time concepts or want to enhance your knowledge on real time system to take your research to next level, I highly recommend this book for you.

About the Author
Chuck Fisher was an experimental test pilot for the Boeing Company for 27 years, served in the Military Police during WWII, flew fighter interceptors in Korea, and participated in 17 missions in Vietnam as an instructor-pilot. He performed the entire Category One testing on the B-52G and H models. An Aeronautical Engineer, he retired from Boeing in 1984. There, he was Project Pliot on three programs. He became Chief of Flight Operations and Senior Experiemental Pilot before ending his career as Chief of Systems Safety. He has over 30,000 hours of flying experience in both peace and war.

Definitely a High, Not a Low

Chuck Fisher is quite a character. If half of what he told in this book is accurate, he had a profoundly colorful life with many adventurous exploits. I am sure many of them did not seem like adventures at the time. Some were nightmares. Like the time one of his superiors tried to get him killed. It was just good fortune that allowed him to survive that episode. I met Chuck Fisher at a book signing when I bought his book and he was an interesting man with a slightly different demeanor than you would expect. I expected a gruff, cursing egomaniac based on what I had heard. He was actually fairly soft spoken, possibly due to the chronic lung disease caused by his years of heavy smoking. But he was not the aggressive person you would expect from the book. Besides being soft spoken, he displayed a very introspective, sharp intellect. It was clear that he was a very deep thinker, not a brutish outspoken egocentrist like many pilots. He was also huge. Very tall and undoubtedly, before disease claimed him, very well muscled man. His book is fascinating reading and shows how his fantastic knowledge of airplanes and flying saved his life on many occasions. It tells how, on one occasion, how he saved a multimillion dollar B-52 test airplane and likely his own life and the lives of his crew by flying and safely landing a damaged airplane that other aeronautical engineers said was unflyable. Exciting reading that makes you feel like you were there with him.

Resurrection Power

When I started reading the book, my impression was that it was like a manual for the pastors who were to be under the covering of Pastor Maldonado. I wondered if it was for me, but I kept reading...and was happy that I did. I have had the baptism in the Holy Ghost for many years but I had never even thought about our having the Resurrection Power like Maldonado teaches. My whole thinking now has changed. It is opening up a whole new way of thinking and approaching healing and Creative Miracles. I highly recommend this book. It is bleeding yellow highliter from all the notes. I judge a book by how many notes I take. If you are happy thinking you just want to make into heaven by the skin of your teeth or have a little cabin in the corner of Gloryland...then this book isn't for you. But if you truly want to do as Jesus commanded...and that is to spread the Gospel to the far reaches of the Earth, get this book. The Resurrection Power is the only way to bring the Kingdom of God here as it is in heaven.

An Absolute Must-Read!!

The Kingdom of Power is an EXCELLENT training manual for understanding the Kingdom of God as God intended it to be preached and understood and more importantly, the confirmation thereof with signs, wonders, and miracles. It is a practical guide to a spiritual subject that the Body of Christ desperately needs to understand. And not only does it present biblically sound theory, but it is chocked full of firsthand accounts of miracles that have happened as people around the world have have had their own encounters with the Kingdom of Power! I cannot admonish you enough to order your copy of this book today!!!

A Challenge to Orthodoxy

Democracy Defended is going to be a very important book. In some ways, it harks back to the old "Why So Much Stability?" paper by Tullock in Public Choice in 1981. In other ways, it represents a careful reconsideration of claims, both theoretical and empirical, made by William Riker and others about the incoherence of democracy. But the book is more than that, representing a genuinely original contribution to democratic theory in the largest sense. One can find strands of Rousseau, Habermas, and other defenders of deliberation and democracy, but the perspective is Mackie's own.
The best way to represent the viewpoint succinctly is this: there are two very different ways that democracy might be attacked.
* The first is that, just as Rousseau claimed, if people act selfishly and egoistically government may not work very well. The 51% can expropriate wealth from the other 49%, and even make then slaves. Taxes, public policy, and basic rights may be skewed and distorted. The majority can tyrannize over the minority.
* The second is that there may be a fundamental incoherence in group "will," even if each individual is doing the best he can to achieve the best for the group, rather than himself or herself. All that is required is disagreement in judgments about the right thing to do.
The two require very different defenses, and since the argument is very lengthy I will only summarize it briefly. Mackie argues that the main empirical claim, that cycles should be immanent, is simply false. In fact, it is difficult to find even a single example of a true cycle in either elections or legislative processes. He exhaustively tracks down the background behind every supposed example, and shows that there are important questions about the validity of the evidence marshaled in support of the claims of cyclists. Though I am myself not a fan of Mackie's conclusion, I found myself persuaded that the counterattack he mounts, and the evidence he presents, is very powerful, and should make those who have argued that cycles are everywhere rethink our positions.
He also argues that democracy, both in terms of institutions and the dispositions of participants, simply does not look like the social choice models portray it. Both in terms of personal experience, and a discussion of democracy more generally, he makes a very detailed and closely reasoned defense of a broader conception of democracy, one in which narrow self-interest and strategic action plays a smaller role than that usually described in rational choice theory.
A strikingly original, well-researched, and profound work.

Suspect sociology of democracy

This is an important challenge to the various writings of Arrow and his social choice theorems on democracy. And it is long overdue. The material is not easily accessible save by someone in the field and this compendium is invaluable for a relative outsider aware of this scholarship but unable to proceed into the details. As the author notes, one can only wonder at the influence of the views of Arrow and his followers on a whole generation of students now global executives, stewards of industry, and diplomats. The apparent rigor of this kind of mathematicized sociology hides the often spurious character of these exercises in ideology (with Neo-Classical eonomics the champ in this deceptive vein). The behind the scenes influence of this kind of thinking needs an alertness to its actual effects, which aren't speculative, e.g. the Chinese propaganda system is known to exploit this thinking for its legitimation purposes.

About the Author
Aristotle was born in 384BC. For twenty years he studied at Athens at the Academy of Plato, on whose death in 347 he left, and some time later became tutor to Alexander the Great. On Alexander's succession to the throne of Macedonia in 336, Aristotle returned to Athens and established his school and research institute, the Lyceum. After Alexander's death he was driven out of Athens and fled to Chalcis in Euboea where he died in 322. His writings profoundly affected the whole course of ancient and medieval philosophy.

Good edition of the Greek text with a clear and helpful translation by H. Rackham.

This is a very good edition of the Nicomachean Ethics translated by H. Rackham. The english text (available at Perseus Digital Library) is intended for those who want to read the greek text and use the english as a support, as the english text will often interpret the text and undo many of the obscurities of the original, preserved in more faithful translations as the one of W.D. Ross. For those working with this text I would recomend both Rackham's and Ross's translations.

The greek text is the one of Bekker, revised with the aid of Susemihl (1880), Bywater (1891) and Alpet (1902), and published notes of other scholars (like H.H. Joachim). (The greek text is also available at Perseus.)

Overall, I found this one to be the best edition for scholarly purposes.

As of the book itself - materially - it a is a decent edition. It has a nice binding and a hardcover. The pages are somewhat thin and may get damaged if you just hold the book long enough (especially if you tend to sweat in your hands). The letters are big enough so you can read without difficulty, but you won't have much space in the page to writte comments (unless you can write really small).

The best edition of the Ethics

Still to my mind the best edition and translation of the Ethics. I say this as someone working on his own. Besides the obvious quality of content, the publication is superior: beautifully bound with strong clean paper in a nice sized book that is clear to read.

A good version

Aristotle was for a long time difficult to understand, but I later learned that it was because I had the wrong teachers. Most people I talked to from when I was very young never completely understood it, but they pretended to as a way of justifying certain actions. Among my official professors in university, it turned out that the first only gave me a basic understanding of it, the second had mostly studied new age interpretations, the third gave a repeat of the first, but she had less understanding. When I was finally learning the truth of it from decent university professors, I still wasn't completely certain of what I was learning because of the past confusion, and I wasn't sure where to look for a good translation, as a French translation of Aristotle's works had some bad translation. A former professor who had good knowledge of it recommended this. And now it is all much clearer.

I do not agree with everything that Aristotle wrote and taught, and I have found flaws. But this is a good book to read in order to better understand what he really did say. When a person has problems understanding a professor, others often say to read it yourself, but they often do not give good suggestions of specifically what to read. This is one of the better versions.

Osprey's done it agian!

'Bf-109 aces of the Russian Front' is a truly wonderful book! With 82 pages of wonderful drawings and photos and information. I especially loved it when I saw Erich Hartmann (with 352 kills) and Gerhard Barkhorn (301 kills) in the book. I thought the information on these aces was fantastic! The color plates are well drawn, always a plus when modeling, (I wish I had read this book before I built a Bf-109 in 1/32 scale and could have done Erich's plane).
To read about the German pilots rack up almost unheard of scores while battling the deadly Russians is incredible. (If you want to experience some action for yourself, buy IL-2 Sturmovik PC game).
This book is a must have for me and my collection of other Osprey and encyclopedia books. I'd give this book 6 stars, but that's not going to happen. This is only my opinion, but I think you'll really like this book after reading it.
A truly great book! 5 stars all the way!

short but sweet

Although a little expensive for a short book, it is well worth the price. This book isn't meant to be a definitive summary of the air war in Russia, but it is a wonderful introduction to WWII air combat on the eastern front. The book is packed with great photos (and descriptive captions), comprehensive ace statistics and beautiful illustrations of their actual planes. It is very balanced between giving an overall summary of the eastern front war and providing actual accounts of real German pilots. Naturally it is centered around the Bf-109 but it doesn't read like a list of statistics; it is well-written enough to read all the way through, captions and all. This is a perfect supplement for anyone interested the Luftwaffe, the Soviet-German war, or especially the Messerschmitt Bf-109. Everyone will learn something from this book.

Detailed, accurate and fast paced

This book is a wonderful account of the Luftwaffe fighter units in the Eastern Front, presenting all the leading personalities, the aces and a wealth of statistics and little known facts. The color profiles are top quality and with the exception of a few minor mistakes (like the date of Gunther Rall's return to the front in August 1942, or his total Eastern score when he left for JG11) the text is very accurate, fascinating and extremely useful as a reference. To the readers that are enthralled by this book and the unbielievable achievements of the Jagdwaffe in the East, I would recommend also Werner Held's excellent pictorial book "The German Fighter Units over Russia" as the perfect companion to Weal's work.

Ella has been naughty! She has been eating at a diner at Moon Alley for a few weeks when all along she has been forbidden to by her vampire master. Well what fresh H E double hockey sticks happens to her!! She get's captured and the only thing she has as a human is her blood link with her vampire master, who cant do a thing because of the peace treaty!! And as you know a blood link can only gives you a mental link.

WORSE yet!! She is captured because Darren the pack leader of Moon Alley believes she is her FATED MATE!! He has been looking for her for weeks and the call of the luna has been luring her to the diner all along!! What will she do!? Le Sigh Stay with her "disgusting" MATE (even though he is soooo attractive)? OR go back to her MASTER (who she doesn't find attractive)!! Woman and their war starting abilities!! UGH!!

If you like the Vampire ~ Girl ~ Werewolf love triangle with a a lot of spice then you will like this paranormal twist!! WARNING ~ There is a cliffhanger. Which if you know me, I am never amused with, but the second book is out and I did read it. Stay tuned for my next review. I did give this a 3.5 rounded to a 4. I was wishy washy because Ella was wishy washy. I felt her emotions and hung off the cliff with her. I don't like hanging of cliffs, hmmmmmpppffff

The writing is very good and the characters (even though Elle is wishy washy) are well developed so I do want to keep going so... Stay tuned!!!!

Pretty good story. It will be interesting to find out what happens in the next book. I don't like cliff hangers so I couldn't give it five stars. But, if it would have been one book, I would have given it five stars.

Sexy start for this serial.

Ella is human Chosen by a very powerful vampire and is basically a possession. She is allowed freedom to do almost anything she wants. The one rule is to stay away from Moon Alley and the werewolves. She doesn’t and is captured by the werewolf pack’s alpha, Darren. He is sure the moon (Luna) has lead them to each other. Although Ella unexpectedly really enjoys being held and kissed by Darren, she has called for her master to come and get her. The vampires are angry and the werewolves don’t want to lose their Alpha’s mate, ao tensions are extremely high. The longer Ella is with Darren the less she wants to leave. To prevent an all out war between the vamps and the wolves she plans to escape and leave Darren, going back to the vamps. I’m still pulling for Ella and Darren to find a way to be together without a bloodbath. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
